The last couple of days I've been talking to a blank manufacture about a couple of idea's Ive had on a blank. Need ya'lls input and opinions. The blank I am looking at 7', lite power, moderate action. Now when I say light power, I dont mean like in a light spinning reel. It would be basically a tad bit more backbone than the ugly stick striper rods. Basically these rods would be light enough to fish SML but have enough back bone to take to the salt for the big boy stripers.
What would everyone like as in color? Solid black, white, or a differnt solid color? A solid color with metal flake? Or how about polka dots The options are endless on the color of the blank.
The guides would be a bit heavier dutty than what you would find on the ugly stick striper rods. Also how about an acid wrap guides? Those that have never seen them its where the guides start ontop of the blank then spiral to the underside of the blank like a spinning rod. These setup works really well for trolling as it takes away the tendency of the rod to twist in the rod holder. I lent one of my personal rods done this way to a guy on the lake and he loved how when trolling his umpbrella rigs he did not have to fight the rod to stay upright.
I personally like an anodized alluminum reel seat such as the one's below or could go the route of a graphite reel seet, one a little larger than you would find on the ugly sticks.
The grips would be thicker, more like an offshore grip. And have eith a gimbaled rubber butt or a smooth rubber butt.
Not sure on a deff price yet as I am still working the details out with the blank manufacture. But looking like it would run in the $150-$200 range. They would come with a limited lifetime warrenty. And built right here local of course so any warrenty work would be hassle free.
Now I know the price is much higher than what you can go get an Ugly Stick for. Unfortanily there is not a custom rod builder out there that can come close to the price of an ugly stick and use quality parts and materials especially not being built over seas. Not knocking them as I know they are a favorite around here, and they are decent rods.
Is there an intrest out there for this? Opinions?
