Has anyone seen or used self-contained light fixture to get legal for night traveling that I wouldn't have to wire into to my boat battery?
Clamp-on kinds that I could stow in the boat house would be ideal, so they don't get battered while the boat is tied to the dock.

DR - the only complaint I have about those (and especially the permanent mount ones) is they sit low when on the outboard cowling and depending on where you or the other guy is in the boat you will likely block line-of-sight view to the light.... hopefully the bow nav lights are still visible.... just scares me when running down the lake at night and (not) seeing boats rigged like this.

Think I posted a rule on the old forum, all around has to be one meter above the side lights, will look it up for sure tonight. Yes according to Navigation rules the all around has to be one meter higher than the side lights, a lot of the bass boats on the lake running the light on top of the motor are not legal.

I use the clamp on ones! Most tackle shops have them. Walmart has them! Runs on d batt. Looks like a flashlight. One night goes threw a pack of batteries though! Same ones mward talking about!

did not know if they had changed them or not, I had a couple on a little boat I had, ended up just wireing in and using a battery, sure did take a bunch of battieries to stay out all night, might be more to start with but LED's would be easier on batteries if you can find them in a clamp on.

I bought one of the D battery powered lights and mounted it to a telescoping rod. I put it in one of the factory rod holders on the deck boat. It works great. When not in use just retract the rod and stow it in boat. I use this rig because the factory stern light is part of my top which I don't run because it gets in the way when fishing.

Thanks for your input everybody. I found some battery powered LED lights but the reviews said their mounts were terrible and broke right away. So I guess I'll stick to day fishing until I find something that won't kill me in battery cost and looks like it might last. On an unrelated note I got my new Joy Fish 8' 1/2" cast net delivered today, FedEx. May get a chance to try it tonight. This ought to be comical. The old 5' I can open just with my arms, I mean my wingspan is over 6' and that doesn't leave much to centrifugal. But the new one is going to take some learning. Today though I have to insulate and drywall a garage so Monday I can get on to the other project people have been waiting on... If I'm lucky work won't let me fish at all. Gotta stay busy. Hey, look. Leo posted this morning.

I wired my 13' boat I used a 1/2" stick of pvc pipe to run the wires in then just hooked them up to the battery when I needed them kept the wires out of the way and didn't cost a bunch, I found a couple of lights at a yard sale.

Mw,
I was worried about that also until I went with another guy and watched the boat we use at night in the dark from a distance and that light REALLY shows up, so much so it's obvious it's ours.
I dont worry anymore.
