I know this must have been discussed before but someone told me I should use an octane booster in the gas for my 200 hp outboard. I do always try and use ethanol free gas. I am not sure if this is a good idea or not, anyone else do this or something else?
Thanks.

I'm not using specifically an octane booster but have been religious about using Stabil Marine as well as Yamaha Ring-Free whenever I fill up - I'll use the Stabil even when getting Ethanol free gas "just in case".
The user manual for the Yamaha 250 says to use 89 or 90 octane gas and often I can only get 87 on the lake in Ethanol free....

Any standard or should I say stock marine engine will not require an octane booster however depending on hp and year and design (2 stroke vs. 4 stroke) running the proper octane will make a difference. Almost all older engines run much better on 93. As also mentioned stabilizer should be run year round regardless of ethanol or not. Mercury ran independent tests a few years ago on several brands of gas and determined it had degraded after only 3 weeks from pumping at a station. If by chance you do run ethanol gas make sure the stabilizer you use states on the bottle that it "prevents ethanol seperation" If it seperates it causes major problems regardless if your motor is designed to run on ethanol or not.

Actually, the lower the octane the more flammable it is. The higher the compression ratio of an engine the higher the octane needs to be to keep it from pre-igniting ( or dieseling). If your engine is not Knocking(dieseling) under load, then your octane level is fine. I too always use stabil marine whether ethanol or not. Who knows for sure whats in that underground tank.

Sea Foam is one of the best products on the market, use it all the time in boat, lawnmower and weed eater, keeps the engine clean and helps the fuel stay runable.

Hate to be the naysayer, but Seafoam is light oil, ALCOHOL and water.... As religiously opposed as we are to alcohol in our gas, why would you intentionally add it?
Also, be careful adding octane boosters to E-10.... Many octane boosters are.... wait for it..... alcohol!
