We worked for several hours, but all we could get is three average baits of this size....

Unfortunately not - but it was not for the lack of trying. I had an opportunity to get out on some East TN waters with guy I know out there and we hit it hard all day on Thur & Fri. On Thur all we could manage was 3 skip-jack and then one tug that we did not connect on when we did a little cut-bait at the end of the day. On Friday we did a little better on the skip-jack, getting 5 pretty quick, and caught several nice white bass while trying to catch the skip-jack. We did finally get the skunk off with a small TN striper - 24 lbs.... Oh, and Penn.... that fish was caught on a Avet MXL paired with a Ugly Stik Striper rod, and 30 lb test..... I will say those are nice reels and the lack of the level-wind was not a big deal - sort of became natural to guide it with my thumb after just a little while. The MXL and that 30 lb test with the Ugly Stik had plenty of power on this fish, though this was a "dink" for these waters - the guy I was fishing with is a big-fish guy who regularly catches them in the upper 30s & 40's. We had a little more action that day, with a couple of boils and chases and one good pull down when we were cut baiting, but we did not connect as we were both almost asleep when the rod bent over.... think we had forgotten what you're supposed to do when that happened Saturday AM I got out on the mid-Watts Bar area with a group of guys and we hit the back of a creek for a few hours. A couple of small groups of fish were busting on bait while we pulled medium gizzards around on planers & freelines - we caught two twin 19 lbers that morning.... I was standing by the rod when the 1st fish blew up on the board and jerked the planer back - I did us SML guys proud.... The wind was terrible Thur, Fri & Saturday - we got off the water around noon on Saturday and hung out around the camp-fire. A couple of the guys threw out some rods with cut bait and we took turns reeling in the Blues..... This was a 24 lb Blue Cat that decided to chomp on a cut gizzard head. Several in the 4-8 lb range were caught and then a 30 and 32 lb were caught at night - one on Fri night and one on Saturday night...
