Hello All,
My Name is Nate. I am currently stationed in Ft. Eustis, in Newport News, Va. I have been in the Army for 16 years and Been here in VA for one year now. I have a Ranger 520 bass boat and mostly fish Lake Anna for Striper and Bass and the Chicahominy River for Bass. I am taking a camping trip this weekend to SML and bringing my boat to try my luck at SML stripers. I just found this forum today and I will read through all the historic posts that I can to gather some info. I am active on VA Outdoors forum (same username) as we discuss Lake Anna very frequently (lake Anna Cup was yesterday). I know how it is with new guys on forums and the Cherry Picking, so im not going to ask for specific information, but some general info on at least which half of the lake to start on would be appreciated. Never fished a lake this big. Putting in at stae park, so should i proceed up or down from there?
Out here at Lake Anna, secondary points in 8-20 FOW near channel swings/ledges using toothaches, T-rigged creatures, and jigs have been a good pattern lately. I caught just one striper this weekend on a white fluke/weigthed hook. Anyway, if any of you guys venture out to lake anna area, feel free to hit me up and Ill share what i know, but if SML is a good as i hear, then why would you go to Anna? lol.... Anyway, look forward to being on the forum.

Welcome, most use live bait up here for the stripers, there are some that throw lures for them, may be some fish still down the lake, know most are fishing up towards Hardy. Seems like the fish are in the back of coves off the main lake. Might have some luck throwing fluke or bucktails to points. Might also be a good idea to check out one of the guides and let them show you how they do it.

Thanks for the reply. What is the best live bait? Shad? What is the predominate forage on SML?

Shad or alewives, most catch with a cast net. You can buy large minnows at a couple of the marinas on the lake, I don't know how they work, haven't used them in years. If you look at the forum on live bait fishing Bentrod has a great post on live bait fishing.
