If any of you want to check the current lake levels prior to making a trip, you can use the following phone number. The list of lakes includes Smith Mountain Lake, Leesville Lake, Claytor Lake and others. Just dial the main number, then follow the prompts to get the lake you want.
It is especially helpfull for Leesville Lake which fluctuates so much.
Leesville lake has a low water level of 600 feet, and a high water level of 613 feet.
I have found over the years that the best level for fishing Leesville is between 604 feet and 607 feet, give or take a foot. These levels will give you good water for the ramps, and not put you in water up in the trees and over the banks. You can always fish at any water level, but if the water is real low, or real high, you could experience various problems.
