Greetings,
Currently throwing a 6' radius x 5/8 Joyfish net and while its been superb in 15 foot or less I struggle over deeper water. Ive located a few options and looking at going up with my mesh size. Has anyone thrown 1" mesh? Likes or dislikes? I can see the wider mesh being an issue for smaller gizzards swimming out but over deep water seems like my best bet.
Thoughts please.

I have a 5/8" that I tore to shreds recently so pulled out a 3/4" that I had with a few holes that I just patched up to get by - it does well - should sink a little faster and its been catching gizzards - though my catching has been in <10' of water this time of year. The only issue is the bigger the mesh I think the weaker the net is if you tangle it - though in theory they are made with larger test mono in the mesh.
You're going to struggle in deeper water with a 6' net regardless of mesh size unless they are schooled up in a big way - the bigger gizzards are just fast, and the net will sink slower than they can swim - and with a 6' they have a lot better chance of escaping. When they are deep a 10' is almost a must, espicially when they start to spread back out a bit.

I threw 1"(12') and 1-1/4'(14') nets for mullet in Florida. They sink FAST and the larger mesh still gilled large roe mullet. Are you planning on getting a bigger net or sticking with the smaller size? If it were me I would go to a 10' net and 5/8" mesh as it would sink much faster than a 6' net due to the added length of the lead line. OR get ya some u-rigs. LOL

Good point Gator - it is less about the bait escaping through the mesh as it is them getting their heads far enough into the mesh to gill themselves.... and keep in mine a 1" mesh has a 2" stretch so a head of a nice gizzard could definitely gill in that....

Had a huge mess today when I threw a 1/2" mesh net on a school of 4" alewifes. They were gilled from the top to the bottom of the net, didn't think I'd ever get them out. They sure weren't what I was trying to catch. Never caught that many before.
