Weather: Overcast with periods of drizzle, light & variable winds. Temps in mid-50's rising to low 60's
Water: 63-68, visibility of 3-5'
Techniques: Live bait spread - assorted big gizzards (money-makers to large) on free-lined planers, alewives & "peanut" gizzards on light-lines and downlines
I came up to the lake on Thursday evening with the thoughts of slipping out on Fri AM 1st thing to try and find some breaking fish. I decided to make a quick late-night bait run, but the full moon overhead and the front blowing through with 20 mph gust made that a short-lived idea. Then, when the alarm went off at 6a, I was just not feeling it so went back to bed - turned out to be the right call as all reports of Friday morning fishing were bad, very bad.
After I wrapped up the must-dos for the day I slid down to the creek about 3:30 to catch some bait. Lots of small bait in the creek and I figured the big boys were there as well.... Started getting them 2 and 4 at a time (not on every throw of course). I think I put a BASS tourney winning basket in the boat using my cast-net lure
Kept working it and nailed 10 at a time one one throw and then later a nice 20-gizzard throw to polish off 40-45 baits in the tank. The gizzards are starting to school up in the creeks
Time to go look for breaking fish. But nothing other than some good conversation with Lacy & Creig and I ran into Dan Wilson that was out for a little R&R himself and talked with him till sunset.
I did make another run out late night to try and catch some alewife to go with the gizzards - they were not easy pickings but put 18-24 in the tank and called it a night.
I had made plans to fish with Brcarls from the board - I picked him up just before 7 and we headed towards our destined fishing grounds.
You know Fall is here when you are greeted with this
We put the spread out anyway, fighting through the leaves as we went.
We had some action before too long - the first fish was a decent one in the 30"-32" range but it made a very quick exit pre-photo when it found a way to slide off the back deck and over the transom.
Fortunately there were more to come (not many, but some).
We took a break for a quick lunch (a modest chessburger, fries and unsweet tea), and got back out there.
We almost picked up a hitch-hiker - thought for sure this little guy was going to climb up on the swim platform as we went by.
We hit a few different creeks to try and find some fish gorging on the mass of bait in the back..... We found the bait.....
But it took a few tries to find the fish. Decided to go hit a spot that had produced some nice fish last year in Oct - at first it seemed they were not there, but we made another pass and it produced.
and produced....
and produced.....
About 5 we headed back closer to the house to look for breaking fish - nothing going so we put bait out in one more creek - had one strike which popped the planer but that was it - called it a day at 7pm and headed to the house.....
Most of our fish came off the smaller money-maker gizzards on planer boards, though the light-lines with small bait produced a few fish. Ended the day with 6 fish to the boat and probably 5-6 missed hook-ups and one nicer-sized fish where the knot at the hook broke as the fish got close to the boat.....
