Weather: Overcast with light mist from time to time; temps in the mid 60's
Water: 70, visibility of about 3'
Techniques: Casting a 4" pearl-colored Storm swim bait on a Pflueger President 6740x spinning reel & 7' MH rod with15 or 20 lb YoZuri florocarbon leader and 15 lb "Crystal Fusion" braid - not my favorite but I've never gotten around to respooling the reel.
Beautiful weather for striper fishing - overcast and misting/drizzle all day. Had the family up this weekend so today was a (mostly) non-fishing day... a lazy morning and then a late lunch out and about.
Snuck out this afternoon around 3:30 to try and net some big gizzards to for Sunday morning. After almost 2 hours I finally netted one "money maker" shad to go along with the three "big nut" gizzards that I had tossed in for the heck of it along the way And somewhere in there my trolling motor plug fell apart - looks like the wires pulled loose for some reason causing it to perhaps arc and run hot. I'm about to just hard-wire the darn thing in - having a hard time finding a plug that works well on the larger gauge wire that is work a darn...... think I'm going to try Battery Tender's plug...
Anyway, I had run over to another nearby creek after mine proved barren of decent sized shad (though there are a billion small to 4" shad) and when I popped back into my creek I spotted fish busting bait on a big shallow point, so I cut the big motor and fired the trolling motor up all the way - another bass boat was there casting to them and I had time to fire off a text to Tyler that fish were breaking as I got within range. Saw a fish roll some bait off towards the middle of the creek and I lobbed the swim bait over in that direction, it landed right in the middle of the swirl - let it sink a couple of seconds, a few turns of the reel and it was Fish On!
This one seemed to have some spunk in it - had to palm the spinning reel a little for some extra drag as the bottom of the creek there is full of trees. About the time I hooked up Tyler came rolling into the creek so he got to watch the show. Was a nice, fun fight on spinning tackle and I landed a 34", 12 or 12.5 lb fish. Quick weigh, length, photo & release.
By the time I got this one back in the water the rest had gone down. Did see them come up futher back in the creek and trolled that way but they never came back up. Tyler had already headed out searching and I followed to a near-by point where one of our guide buddies was pulling bait, but they did not break. I headed back to my creek in hopes they had come back up, and my time had almost expired.... nothing else that evening.
Not going to complain about a nice fish on my 1st cast........
