Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and appreciate you guys putting this together and keeping it going. I will post a pic of my first fish from the lake no matter how embarrassing ;-) I will be on the Blackwater side so I hope to hear from some of you on that side. Looking at some of the threads I have a lot to learn.

Welcome and look forward to your posts. Not sure if the BW side has any fish though. I think they are all up on the Roanoke side. LOL

So I went fishin today. ... Sort of. Decided to try my hand with the cheapo walmart special cast net. After practicing some yesterday thought I was all that. Most casts went somewhat well and I spotted some shad flicking on the surface yesterday. So today was going to be the day. Sure enough I saw some flicking but they were in deep water so I got nothing. Tried going back in a cove and saw some again but no luck ( or more likely no skill). I don't give up easily so it must have looked kind of funny if someone was watching cast after cast with nothing to show for it. Finally gave up and put a red fin on and cast a while. Skunked. I'll be back with a better net and a little more experience. Loved every minute of it.

It will come...... those Walmart nets just sink so slow and often won't open up very well.... the bigger shad are FAST! However, as thick as the small bait is right now, look for a dark pod of shad, flicking on the surface, and you should be able to at least net some small 3" size ones unless the mesh of your net is too big and they are swimming out - what size radius (how big around) and what size mesh (3/8', 1/2", etc) do you have? For those small "peanut" shad, you'll want 3/8" - they will likely gill in a 1/2" and swim through anything 5/8" or larger......
