Note that this is GPS an Downscan ONLY. No sidescan but also no "traditional" sonar. In a lot of cases the traditional sonar excels at marking fish and if rather 1st have a good traditional sonar and then downscan. Especially in the 5" screen size as the resolution of the screen and pixel density will make individual fish hard to see as they often show as white dots vs a colored arch on traditional sonar. Here is a review by a guy that does a lot of Lowrance reviews. Note he has the regular Elite 5 (traditional sonar) next to the Elite 5 DSI so he's showing both screenshots - don't far confused that you get regular sonar with the Elite 5 DSI. www.thehulltruth.com/marine-electronics-forum/317662-lowrance-dsi-first-impressions.html#bThat said for the money it is a good GPS unit and downscan so it may be a decent deal for you - question is if you will then still want a traditional sonar unit to go with it

Thanks mwardnscu! Man this technology is confusing! I have a lot to learn. Thank god for this forum. I have dash mounted L X47. Came with the boat. I guessing this is traditional sonar? So I could keep it and add the DSI. Is this what you are describing/thinking?

Well, the x47 has a monochrome, low resolution screen - I've not seen one in action on SML so I don't know how well it would do in marking fish vs bait vs. trash and how easy it is to tell the difference - color does help a lot here.
But yes, having a regular sonar beside the DSI (and your GPS) is a good option without stepping up to something like the Elite7 HDI which has regular sonar + DSI + GPS. The Elite 7 HDI with xducer is going to run you right at $700, so it is 2X the money, but you are kind of getting 2 machines in one there and a lot bigger screen / higher resolution screen....

I bought the Elite 7 without GPS. The unit is great, sonar and down scan. The only regret I have is not getting it with GPS.

Agreed ...I picked up the Elite 7x (which I highly recommend) and do wish it had gps at times. I havnt used it a ton on SML but frequently on Leesville and it is a stellar. To the OP ..Not sure your budget but you can pick up the Elite 7x for just a few $$ more and have a much better unit altogether.
