I have been reading all of the old postings trying to catch up. Last time I was fishing over the winter the lake level was way down. Has the level come back up to normal now ? Are all the ramps usable ? Does anybody know why the level was so low last fall ?

The lake has been back up since January. Lack of rain last summer/fall/early winter was the main driver to the low levels - about the time they finally kicked in the 2nd or 3rd phase of reduction in outflows the rain came. It has actually been between full & normal pond pretty much all summer until recently when its been fluxuating between 793 and 794 due to the warmer weeks (more power generation) and dry spell we've had. You can check the latest water level any time on this site: smlfishingforums.proboards.com/thread/92/sml-lake-levelAs to ramps, with the water up at current levels I would doubt you'd have problems with any of them.

I put in at the Penhook ramp yesterday and the water was a little low. Didn't have any problems though.

Here is another site for water level, shows a graph that you can see the level for the last few days, also shows incoming and outgoing flow. You can sign in for updates to get sent to your email when the flow changes. www.smithmountainlakelevel.com/

Thanks for the link as well... So I'm curioUs...what is sea doo floats? What are you referencing to as in see doo floats? If I had to guess its the little floating dock's that people get for their jet ski's, the plastic ones you just drive right up on. On antoher note about Lake levels. What does anybody think is going to happen to them once they complete the new Water supply line to Bedford and Forest?

It's in the lake level site/graph. My guess is that whoever maintains that site has a jetski lift and that is the lake level at which his or her jetski floats away

As to the new water draw - they claim it amounts to only a tenth of an inch a day if we had no water flowing in. Guess we'll see......

My guess is generation demand with the cold temps the last several days - let's see what happens over the weekend and if it comes back up some.... there could be some maintenance or what not going on having them bring it down a bit... We've not been getting a ton of rain recently, so it could start to be a concern. However, looking at the detail info on the AEP site, at least today, we still have more coming in to SML than going out of Leesville, and when they pump back we'd be back to 794+ www.aep.com/environment/conservation/hydro/ - down at the bottom of the page....

Seems like the level goes down during the week and then they pump back on the weekends. I was told that most of the power SML creates goes to the big power grids up north. So with them having colder weather more power is needed so they generate more, therefore the water goes down in the lake, when weekend comes and most of the plants shutdown less power is needed so they pump back from Leesville and come Monday it all starts over again.
