Weather: Low 50's to start, rising to upper 70's. Foggy, burning off to blue-bird skies. Light winds
Water: 75-76, visibility of 5'
Techniques: "peanut" gizzards (3") and money-makers (8"-10") on downlines and a few lightlines
So, we decided to see if we could trade our Saturday bad luck in for a some numbers on Sunday. We were all too tired to mess with staying up late to catch alewives, so we just went to the back of my creek and caught a bunch of peanut gizzards and managed to get a few more money-makers in there as well just before dark. Generally ales do better for us on downlines but we figured if they want to eat they'll eat the peanuts.... if not, so be it.
Tyler made a BoJangles run at 7am to get biscuits so Mark and I picked him up at the dock just after 7. It was FOGGY out this morning - it's mornings like this that I bought the radar for..... as we were coming out of my creek we picked up a boat just outside the mouth of the creek on radar that we never did see..... he probably had his lights on but in this soup you were not going to see them...... once we got out of the creek we were able to run on plane about 25 mph with Mark keeping his eyes glued on the screen and mine into the fog - dodging a few other boats out there with plenty of margin.
One thing about the fog - it tells you Fall is here (or almost here)..... and it makes for some nice sunrise pictures...
(when you get this many sunrise pictures you can already tell it's going to be a slim catching report, can't you )
We headed down to an area where we caught a bunch of fish this same weekend last year, and were we had found some in recent weeks. Travis was down there with some customers and we worked the area for a while - picked up a couple of the small 4-8 lb fish that we had avoided the day before during the tourney.
Let Tyler get the 1st one since he did not get one the day before...
We fished that area for a couple of hours but never really found anything but some scattered fish. But we did get some good bent rod pictures...... when fishing is slow you'll take advantage of anything that pulls the line - even if it is timber
About 9:30 or 9:45 we decided it was time to check another spot..... checked a few nearby coves/creeks without any luck so decided to head back up the lake - pulled into a main creek on a bit of a whim and marked some scattered fish then spotted a decent small school on the sidescan - whipped the boat around and put out baits to see what we could do before we called it a morning.
Sure enough - fish on!
We managed to get over the fish a few times though they were not eating well - Tyler dropped a small money maker on a downline and then just a money later we saw this on the sonar.
Then this.....
Then this.... a skinny 12lb / 34"ish fish - could have used this one yesterday.....
Called it a morning about 11 - motored over to one of the on-water grills and enjoyed another early-fall lunch. We doubled our catch of the previous day - 4 fish.... not the "wearing 'em out" we hoped for to make up for the day before, but still a nice morning on the water with some last down-line action before turning on the fall fishing big time.
