Greetings friends,
Me and a buddy are putting in mid morning at Leesville and he expressed an interest in fishing the upper portion of the lake.(Sm Mt Dam) I have located the boat ramp up that way in "Brights" I guess they call it but I wondered if any of you guys had general info about the lake up that way this time of year. I talked to a few old timers about a month ago who said the water can be tricky especially with the various shoals and current. I also read on here that the trash collects in Piggs creek (I think thats what its called) The DGIF writeup says the same and that fishing up there is not very good.
Is it worth it up there this time of year? Im all for uncharted waters but dont want to waste a ton of gas in the process.

its definately tricky. Never being up there before take your time, river channel is narrow and if you get to far to the right or left you can be in some shallow water real quick. Lots of stumps to the right side of the channel in the last 2 miles or so up to the dam, and on the left side is some really thick grass both of which can hardly be seen if the water is just above it. if its low you can see the stumps. Also when you come out of the cove at the ramp and head up lake. There is a island. Stay far to the right bank. If the water is up you cant see the island. Under tolers bridge I usually go through the 2nd or 3rd opening from the left. run the left bank up to the mouth of the river then get over toward the right side and when you get up to all the islands on the left hang fairly close to those. Take ya time and watch the depth. Aint no telling how many boats ive seen up there over the years wide open and evidently no sonar. If they only knew they were in less than 5' of water running wide open id bet they crap their britches. As for fishing...haha Good Luck

Yup I've never done much past the mouth of pigg river.....got the crap scared out of me to running that stretch past pigg.....was in some decent water then poof almost nothing and some big ass rocks.....also I don't know the size of your boat motor but if its not better than 25 horse I advise to stay away cuz when smith sucks back....man that water runs back fast.....saw a small boat one day about 2 miles down stream and he was barely making any ground against the draw back....he finally got to the bank and beached it lol

I decided to venture to the upper reaches out of curiosity... For some reason I forgot about the suggestions to stay right and decided to stay left after passing the Brights launch...BBBBBBBBBBBIIIIGGGGGGG mistake....as you guys stated...within seconds I was propping through sand..scared me .. Glad I did slow way down before hitting it..lesson learned!
