Sat. morning. Air temp at 5:00 was about 60 and the water temp was about 77. Was able to get enough bait off the end of the dock in the morning about 5:00, did have to pick through a lot of peanuts. Went out alone since my wife who is my usual fishing partner stayed home to handle some kid things. She loves to go just to be on the water and run the trolling motor. She is good with the net and takes all the pics. Didn’t have to go far outside of Gills Creek. Plenty of fish in 80-120 FOW and early morning they were feeding. Set out the first downline and while I was setting the second one the first went off. While I was fighting the first the other one went off and the action went on for about an hour. It was all over by 8:00 and there were a few other boats in the area and I assume they did well but I didn’t have time to look. Boated 10 fish with a couple approaching 30’ and lost several others. Moved up river and caught another one about 9:00 and decided to call it a day. I didn’t want to take the time for measuring and pics but wanted to get them back in the water quick. All made a fine return to the water but one so he went home in the cooler.
Sun. morning. Bait was hard at the dock maybe due to the full moon over head but I did manage enough to go out. Since the bite was early on Sat. I was on the same spot before sunrise. Same as Sat. morning. I did get 4 lines in the water before the first went off. Then the second and then the third. Sure could have used some extra hands. Boated 8 fish and lost numerous others because I had my hands full. All action on downlines and I was fishing in 20’ to 30’ FOW over 120’. Again no monsters but they all thought they were big. All were returned. Not many boats around this morning.
What a beautiful day on the lake with Fall like conditions. I have to say it was the best weekend I have had on the lake. Have only been fishing SML for a year now and I owe all my success to the info on this site – thanks guys.
