Hi All,
I fish club-level tournaments as a co-angler out of the richmond, va area (potomac to buggs). I grew up in Roanoke and fished SML some when I was a bit younger (31 now).
Anyway, I still travel back to Roanoke regularly and miss fishing at SML. If anyone knows a club with a good "guest" policy, it would be fun to participate in a low-stress, low-budget event..... or even just fun fish sometime. Let me know.
MAIN QUESTION: I inherited some old maps of SML and Buggs. I'm looking for help deciphering some notes. These maps' notes are from around the early to mid 1980's. There are a bunch of notes about a "smoke grub" being used. Are there any old-timers on here who remember such a bait being popular on SML around that time? Any clue what it was and what the rigging was like? If it helps date it there are also "slow roll spinner bait" notes on the maps as well. This dude fished the gills / blackwater side mainly. techniques go in and out of favor... what were these guys up to?

I don't hear much about people using grubs on SML much, but I know it is an extremely popular technique on other clear water reservoirs. Seems to be a cold water finesse technique and is usually rigged on a simple round jighead for when the bass are feeding on small baitfish. Feel free to share any more notes you find on the maps

I'll look through them and see if there's anything else interesting post. Because of reservoir aging / shoreline development the areas marked may or may not still be any good. I KNOW this guy used to throw a sassy shad on a simple lead-head so maybe it was the same with the mysterious smoke grub.

Hmmmm ....I guess at 50 I qualify as a senior lol.......the grub was more than likely the Gary Yamamoto smoke grub.....3-4 inches long....there was a weedless head that I rigged them on and skipped and flipped them into brush and under docks....also rigged them Texas style on an 1/0 hook and usually 1/16-1/8 once weight or head.....ahhhh the old sassy shad.....the original swim bait....me and a buddy were talking about this last year....back in the 70/80's it was a pretty hot lure....all this new hype about swim baits is just something that has came back in style.

baitcooler, guess I'm one of the ole-timers too. Back in the 80's, we prolly caught more bass on smoked grubs with 1/8 oz. jig head than we did on anything else. Another hot lure back then was a spider jig in smoked color. The green sassyshad was awesome for stripers. I didn't like the green ones with the sparkles in them, they clashed with my sparkly boat.
