Weather: Overcast then raining/drizzing the rest of the morning; temps in the upper 70's, light & variable winds
Water: 83-84, visibility of 2-3 feet
Techniques: Alewives on lightlines & downlines - put a few gizzards out on downline & lightlines but they didn't get any love
We had some friends up at the lake for the weekend and one wanted to do some striper fishing - thought the boys were going to go but they decided not so, so it was just two of us. Tried to recruit Bentrod to jump on for an extra set of hands but he was semi-pre-committed to have one of our other buddies (who of course did not text him until 4am saying he'd not make it).
Went to get bait about 11pm - bait has still be easy even though Bentrod was at the same light just a few minutes before we eere and we loaded up pretty quick - a couple of throws of the 8', 1/2" net - got plenty of nice alewives, but wanted a few gizzards (which we did not need in the end), so we went over to another nearby light and put 6 or 8 dollar-bill and larger gizzards in the tank.
Hit the hay about 1 am and back up at 5ish and on the water about 6am - based on what we'd been seeing recently, we headed to the back of a creek to see if the fish were feeding in the backs and then worked our way out. Did not find them toward the back (stopped when we got to water less than about 15' in the center - might should have gone further back), but as we worked our way back out to about the mid-part of the cove, sure enough, there they were - and they were HUNGRY.
We had some frenzied action for a while - wish the boys had been with us for some extra hands and to enjoy the fun. Decent class of fish with a good percentage in the 26-30" range, and then some in the 18-20" range.
Called Bentrod and Ready2Fish in on the action - Bentrod got a few before heading back down the lake to avoid the approaching storm (which turned out to be more light rain than anything nasty) - good call on his part since he found fish near his place, including the one that left his thumb looking like he'd eating a strawberry jelly donut Ready2Fish was a little later to the party and the fish had mostly moved out of the cove, but he scouted and found them outside the cove along a rock wall on the other side, so we eased over and got back into them for a little while.
We did struggle with keeping the bait alive in the back half of the creek, especially on the light-lines - I think the lightlines were running too high in the water, where it was too warm. As we got to the front part of the creek it was not as bad (and funny enough, that's were the fish seemed to be ). There was a very distinct layer in the creek, and then also out in the channel on the sonar - may have been mud from the recent rains.
Just noticed what was playing on the radio on those pics.... funny as that was pretty much when it was over for the day
Biggest of the day went 31". We had our limit of 4 and a decent channel cat, so the evening menu changed and we had nice fresh fish for diner that evening (and some to send home with our guest). Great morning on the water - got a little wet but not too bad and didn't really notice all that much when we were catching
