Looking to add a trolling motor to my 17' CC. It has a trolling motor plug in the bow and my thought is I should have something plugged into it. LOL. My price range is up to about $700.00. Any suggestions??

I'd recommend a 24V trolling motor. 50-70 lb thrust range I would think on a 17' CC - 70 lb is probably more than enough.... but the nice thing about 24V or even more thrust than you need is that you can run it at lower speeds for longer - running it wide open sucks the batteries fast. If you go MinnKota, get one with CoPilot - the small remote that lets you control speed / direction wirelessly. iPilot adds a few nice features but not a must-have, unless you run across a really good deal as it adds quite a bit of cost. No CoPilot but you can add it (I'm pretty sure) as an add-on for about $130-$150 www.boemarine.com/minn-kota-powerdrive-v2-70pd-v2-24v-70-lb-60/Also, give a call over to Ben @ SML Marine Electronics ( smlmarineelectronics.com/ )and see what type of deal he can work for you - he might even have a used one someone is trying to see, or know of a good one....

One other comment - when you do this, go ahead and replace the trolling motor plug with a new one - if its years old it's likely crap at this point. The Marico locking plugs are good. I've also heard really good things about the BatteryTender trolling motor plugs if you have the room to use them. Finally, check the gauge of the wire from where the TM batters would be up to the bow - use 8 ga minimum - that should be fine on a 17', especially with a 50-70 lb thrust motor.

Thanks mward. I knew I could count on you for solid advice. Would like to hit SML Marine Electronics for the Lowrance 7-HDS too. Good choice? I know that I could secure a better price from the internet or big box stores but I like to buy local. Even if it costs me a few more bucks.

Several of the guys on the lake can sell Lowrance, they may just have to order it - so give them a try..... Captains Quarters, Saunders, etc.

I have the MinnKota PowerDrive V2 with CoPilot. 24v 80# and does just fine on my 26' pontoon so should handle your 17' CC without a problem. I think I paid in your price range for mine.
