Heading down in 2 weeks...trying to decide whether or not to take the boat. Staying in Salvo, NC and not sure if the boat would be a good option. Could always put in at OR inlet, Hatteras inlet or Mann's harbor. Looking to catch trout/redfish/ etc. Not really looking to go out in the ocean. Thoughts? Advice?

don't go with out the boat. Salvo is were I always stay. The fishing hole tackle shop in salvo is the one I always us. Mike is the owner and an awesome guy, he'll fill you in on what happening at the current time your down.
OI is the most central launch. You can fish from the bonner bridge all the way up through the channels and island to pirates cove. Reddrum, trout, flounder, black drum, sheepsheads and stripers. Cobia can be around the bridge aswell.
Biggest thing is, if your not sure of the area. follow the channel markers. Or Follow a charter boat. If you get out of the channels and don't know your water. you can get shallow quick.

I would say take it, just have to be careful, lot of shallow places down there. You might want to check out Fryingpantower.com website, they have some information on the area.

Thanks for the info guys. I am probably going to take it, just a little leery of unknown water. I guess I won't learn it if I don't try it. How far is the Marina from the Oregon inlet bridge?

There is a marina at Oregon Inlet, be really careful if you go out there, the inlet shoals bad and they used to keep a dredge unit down there all the time.
