I have just purchased a boat and would like to jump into the world of Striper fishing and don't know much about it. So. I thought I would ask for help. Most of my fishing experience has been saltwater fishing in South Florida. My fishing preference has always been artificials with little live bait fishing and prefer to stay with the artificials. I would like to know a good rod and reel combo (reasonably priced) to start of with for trolling. Also. my preference is to always buy local. Looking to purchase 4 set ups to start and go from there. Thanks in advance for any help offered. Mike

Captains Quarters at Hales Ford Bridge has a decent supply of tackle, and would help you. Most of the gear you used in FL. would work on stripers on the lake. Go back on this forum and read the older posts, spend the money to go out with one of the guides on the lake, well worth the money. They will also show you what type of gear to use, also have a Sportsman Warehouse in Roanoke and a Gander Mountain. Welcome and glad to have you here.

Franklin Outdoors in Rocky Mount has a good supply of trolling gear. Umbrella rigs, deep diving redfins, deep diving Bombers, Stretch 25's and etc. Ugly stick MH catfish rods are what I use when I troll. Okuma Magda Line Counters are the reels I have.Get a umbrella rig retriever and plenty of gear. Those trees that were left in SML stay very hungry....

Don't get over to Rocky Mount very often and I forgot about Franklin Outdoors. Was going in there the only time I was over there and they were getting ready to close, didn't get a chance to check them out. Will have to go back some time and see what they have.

Another great source is Saunders on Bluewater Drive just off Scruggs road near the Blackwater Restaurant. He has a good selection of reels and gear plus advice on where and how to fish Striper here at the lake..

Thanks guys!! I will check out all of those places. Custom rods are definitely a option. Currently fish with 8' 6" G-Loomis customs with 400 Calcuttas on them. I used them for throwing large bucktails for Snook in Florida. Really looking forward to learning the Striper fishery here in VA. I will not be a stranger to this site. This old boy needs all the help he can get!!!

My trolling rigs are Ugly Stik rods with Penn 309 reels.
My downlining rigs are Ugly Stik rods with Penn line counter reels...
Ugly Stiks are good bang for the buck while getting the job done. I think I've got over a dozen of em!
