So this roof had been "repaired" years ago but it still leaked so I opened it up to have a look. I thought I'd seen it all, but this was a first. Roofing quiz for the morning: what is wrong in this picture (besides the lousy photo quality)? extra credit: what is the fix? (pitch is about 1/12, real flat)

The one side is upside down! New wood on the bad side and fresh shingles the correct way and you good to go! Also where is the tar paper? It should leak like that! Yes this is a first! How can they do a whole side and think its not going to leak? I've never did any roofing so I hope I'm right!

I assume looking at the skylight that we are looking across the roof and the ridge line is to the left? If up is up in the pic then that's your problem right there I was looking for the roofing felt as well - don't see it. I'm thinking the fix if there is bo fproofing felt is to tear it off ad do it right - otherwise put that rubber self-adhering, self sealing membrane over the joints in the wood sheathing, and reshingle The right fix for me would be to call a roofer with insurance - though I'd probably tackle a 1:12 roof. I was on our townhouse roof the other weekend for something - it's probably 8:12 pitch - could be 10:12 and 3 stories + the roof off the ground (though you can first fall in a pporh roof one floor below) - Made it feel like 18:12 . Steeper and higher than I'd be doing any roofing on

Yeah no felt, much less ice/water shield. I tore off the porch roof (~7 squares) and covered it with I/W then felt then shingles. Took about 2.5 days, trash runs included. 7 squares weighs 1800 lbs., for trivial trivia. Shingle manufacturers won't honor their warranty on anything under a 3/12 without ice and water shield on it. You'd have to throw yourself off to fall, or make a misstep near the edge. In 7-8 years it'll need the whole house, garage, dock redone. Farking huge. My kid will be big enough to hump them all by then, and hopefully too smart to. I knew a guy who swore they roofed 12/12's without kickers. I'd have to see it. My limit's 9/12 but that hasn't been tested in years so who knows.
