Water: 77.5 or so, dropping about a degree as the evening went out, visibilty of a few feet
Weather: low 80's, light & variable until about 1 am when the breeze picked up from the NW - probably 5-10 mph
Technique: throwing jointed Thundersticks to the bank while alewives were spawning and fish busting them on the banks.
Went out with our buddy Keith for a little night fishing. Hit is "secret spot" that he almost exclusively fishes at night and has for years. We headed out about 9 to claim the spot and get setup. Was a calm, nice evening and quite on the water except for a number of bass boats that came racing down the channel about 10:20 heading to a weigh-in for a Tue night tourney.
Things stayed quiet for quite a while - around 11 Keith was getting anxious and I think a little nervous that the temps had warmed too much and we'd missed it - I kept reminding him that I'd not hear ales on the banks the previous nights until about 11:30 when I was catching bait. Sure enough, about 11:30 the ales started doing their thing more consistently and we heard some fish busting up on them. Keith landed three largemouth on Thundersticks - going to call him Keith Van Dam Somewhere around 12:30 the stripers moved in - could tell by the change in the blow-ups - much more aggressive. Keith got a small striper, and then a little while later I finally landed my 1st night striper of the year. A 6 lb decent fish.
A little while later I missed what sounded like a bigger one - it hit the lure and I felt the fish but think I yanked the lure from its mouth before getting a good hookset. Keith landed another small fish and that was it for the night. There were fish busting all around us - a few times right at the boat. One time Keith was in the middle of casting and one blew up close by and it startled him so bad that the lure went up in the trees.
The wind picked up around 1 and made it a little tough to control the boat and cast - I think we donated three Thundersticks to the trees between us...... Called it quits around 1:45 or so as the wind seemed to be there for the duration.
Well, at least I got one night fish just as the water temps are rising to the point where it will all be over......
