I use my depth sounder. Easy to see a school, and bait balls, even on a cheap one. This is only if I cant visually see the shad or a disturbance on the water surface.. In my meager experience they usually drive bait into a cove, point or to the top of the water. They seem to move up shallow and back out deeper more than up and down a bank... if they were there and the bait balls are still there I stay for a while...they circle back a lot. If I get bored I put out 2 umbrella rigs, fire up the outboard and ride @ the area watching my sonar.... Thats my 2 cent, ain't been doin it but a couple years....

makes no difference, applies to bait or artificial.... but by the way, 2 weeks ago, in craddock creek, after 2 boats went by pullin live bait on planer boards, one of them a guide. After they got out of the way, I went right behind them with a thunderstick, casting. 2 in 10 min 1 12lb one 15lb. reaction bite, sometimes a fast moving thunderstick, or umbrella trolled @ 5mph makes um bite! Don't overlook it!!!
