A buddy and I have fished the State Park area several times (last summer and last night) for kittyfish from our kayaks. We use Carolina rigged (or something similar) cut or live bluegill. Last night we set up in 10-25 feet of water in several different locations, fishing from 9PM-2AM. I am new to the "fish finder" game, but marked some "bigger" looking fish in every spot we set up.
Results? One 3.5lb channel cat. Last summer we didn't catch a catfish, although my buddy hooked up with a 7lb largemouth. Other than that we just can't seem to "get on the fish".
So, my question is, have any of you had luck around the State Park? Are there any tricks that we are missing?
Appreciate any thoughts you fellas can send my (our) way!
Best, Royce

Try your luck alittle shallower. Somewhere between the bank and 10' deep on points and shoals. What species of catfish are you targeting or you just catfishing in general?

Shadslinger, thank you for your insight. We aren't really targeting a specific species but I did have one line rigged with a live bream and another with cut bream head to kind of encompass both of those spectrums (flatheads and channels).
I am new to the lake so I am doing a lot of learning. Haven't tried other put ins besides Hardy Ford either (but only for bass there).
After reading (on here) about the good catfishing on SML, and how to do it, I just get the feeling that still we aren't doing something right.

Down around the state park there may be a few flatheads, but mostly channel cats, to get into the flatheads you will want to be from Hales Ford bridge up to Hardy and in the river. I fish the blackwater side and occasionally the roanoke side from time to time.

try fishing shallower as mentioned already. also try different baits. while i like cutbait, it is actually more productive for me in the early spring and late fall when water temps are cooler. if youre looking for eaters, try chicken livers, night crawlers or shrimps. if youre looking for the big cats, stick with the cutbait and live bluegills. bites will be fewer but the fish will be more quality. also, ive had better luck with cut bait when i use the middle portion of a fish with the gut pocket and its not as odd as using the head.

try from Bayroc down to 78R on those points and shoals down that section of the lake. Some of the guys used to get some nice ones down there in the summer.

Guys how big of Bluegill are you using for bait? Hooking thought the tail, lip, back or other?
Drop right to the bottom or up a bit? I have a good supply with all my daughter catches off the dock. can put them to good use.
Thanx Dave

When to the pier mid-day using Berkley dough. No hits, no runs, no errors. It was fun to watch bikini girl at the boat launch.

Chunk, you should sit there on a Saturday. I could spend a whole day on a summer weekend and just watch. Its pretty hilarious on what you will see.

Yes, there is lots of entertainment, the people backing a jet-ski trailer are a circus in them selves.

All the boat ramps are like the circus, it always amazes me the things they do at them, the way they try to back and to load boats. A million laughs.
