Anyone tried the new ugly stick striper rods? I'm wondering if they're a good all around rod for planer boards and downlines? A friend bought one of the light medium actions and it sure seemed to bend and awful lot from the reel handle down. Perhaps the MH actions would stiffen that up a bit?

What do you mean by "new"? Have they redesigned them recently. I've used them for 3 years now. Many guys here use the MH for planer boards and ML for Downlines.

7ft MH for boards, floats, etc. 7'6" ML for downrods. I don't like the 7' ML. No backbone at all.
I throw mine in the floor and stomp on them and they keep on keeping on. I've only broken two eye inserts out of 16 rods used hard for 5-6yrs now..stripers to 40+lbs. I bought all of my 7'6" at Sportsmans closing sale few years back for $16ea I think. Hard to beat that price. Bought a MH one day at gander that rang up for $23..went back and got more. I like cheap and durable.

The Catfish rods have a longer foregrip handle and I think a little more backbone than the MH striper rod - could be the same blank just with the different handle and the position of the reel makes it feel stiffer. I think the catfish rods also have that glow-in-the-dark tip. Oh, and it has a picture of a catfish instead of a striper on it

The action is what is different between the two. Backbone and tip action which is achieved by 2 slightly different blanks.

I like cheap and durable. Here's a testament to how durable they are. Sat afternoon Tyler and I are rolling into Captain's Quarters by water for the checkin. I have three or four rods out on the starboard side and am cruising into the slip with the dock pilings on that same side - neither of us realizing the rods are still out until..... The 1st Ugly stick bent all the way back to the point that the QuickDraw holder popped out and the 2nd and probably 3rd rod all took a licking..... but, they kept on ticking - can't tell anything happened to them - ready to fish again...... That commercial where the wife puts the rod in the trash compactor may just be real

Or if Mward knew how to drive a boat...
I was sitting right next to the rods but was half asleep, so therefore it's all Mwards fault as usual!
