All, I'm thinking about upgrading my fishing boat....I've been fishing out of my 18' Lund for 9 years and i'm ready for a change....so it's time to spend some money I don't have. I'm looking at the Carolina Skiff 198DLV, T top, 24V 70lb minn kota, 115 Yamaha.......or...........the 21 - 22' NauticStar Sport, bay boat, similar rigging....
I know there are board members who own these boats...can you share your opinions/comments/suggestions?
One question I have.....the nauticstar has a 37 gallon live well in the stern....and a smaller one in the bow.....I'm wondering if the onboard wells can actually replace the tanks brought on board?...do they have any real filtering, temp retention ability?...or are they wasted space?
From an aesthetics point...I love the bay boat...great looking.
I dock at the lake, rarely trailer my boat, store all my gear in the boat house, onboard storage isn't critical. I'm finally getting a roof put over my lift....it's been exposed for years....
I'm open to any and all lessons learned from experience....thanks in advance for all your comments!

Lund1 - I don't have the specific boat in question, but can give you some feedback on the Bayboat side of the discussion....
NauticStar makes a nice Bayboat with good fit & finish- I almost went with their 22' and then 24' before I decided on the 24' - in fact I was at Chatlee to close the deal on the 24' Nauticstar when I saw the layout of the back of the 24' Sea Hunt and changed my mind - in the 24' size, the Nauticstar had a larger rear casting deck which took up floor space for my tank - the Sea hunt still has a decent rear casting deck but smaller than the NS, and thus more floor space. However, in the 22' range I think they were about equal.
The Bay boat gives you more "fit & finish", a little more refined than the skiff (although if you look at the Skiff Elites they are not far away). Lockable rod storage, etc can be benefits.
The Skiff will probably get you into a little skinnier water than the same sized Bay Boat, though with a 21' Bay Bay you should be able to get into water well under 1.5" - my 24' hull is speced as 15", but that's before you put the motor, gear, fuel, bait tank, people, etc. However, I've been in <2' water with it.
The skiff will not give you as smooth of a ride - even the "semi-V" hull will pound you a lot more than the Bay Boat hull.
In the 21-22' range, you can put a 150 hp on the back of the Bay boat and it will do well - great performance/gas milage engine. I'd put at least a 150 on the 22, and probably even on the 21' (as opposed to a 115). On the 19' skiff, the 115 is probably plenty.
19' skiff vs. 21' and 22' Bay Boat is going to come a a pretty substantial price delta on a new boat - but those 2-3' will also make a big difference in comfort/fishability if you get more than 2 folks aboard.
If you start leaning to the Bay Boats, check out Sea Hunt and pricing from Chatlee (they also carry Nauticstar) - they'll likely push a setup with a Suzuki as they are a little less money, but I'm a Yamaha fan mainly due to the ability to get warranty service around the lake if needed, etc - and Chatlee will sell them with Yamaha's.\
As to the livewells - well, my front console livewell (20ish gal) holds cast nets, and occasionally ice & drinks in the summer, and my rear livewell (38 gal) is a storage compartment ;D They may be OK to let gizzards purge out, or if you have a way to catch and cure out alewives, then keeping cured out ales in them may be OK, but there is no good way to hook up a filration system - you can rig aeration with an in-line or bulkhead Dannco but filtration is the challenge - might be some way to get creative, but in the end the SUperBait Tank is hard to beat.

great stuff....exactly what I was hoping for....I'm headed to Chatlee today and will look at the sea hunts.....i guess the live well issue is dead...i sure was hoping that was my onboard solution and could leave the big tank home....that issue alone almost makes the bay boat (at 21) unacceptable...there's really nowhere to put the tank that I can see....
Cost wise they're not too far apart...nauticstar is running pretty good 21 sport specials with the Yamaha 150....and the new skiff dealer on the lake is pretty proud of his boats....priced accordingly.....
sure do love the look of those bay boats....may not be as sensible but they sure are pretty....
I will PM Travis and ask his thoughts....thanks guys....

You could go this route for the tank - get a custom leaning post made where the tank can sit under the seat and the seat pivots up and away. If you are ordering a new boat, you might be able to get them to leave the leaning post out and save a few $$ - if not, try and get them to NOT install it to save you the hassle to removing it, and then you can sell it to someone else to offset the cost of the custom one.... Other guys pull the leaning post out all together, put the tank where the post was and just sit on the tank (or put the tank on a bit of a riser - pretty sure this is how Travis had his 19' skiff setup.

Oh, Chatlee is a major volume Skiff dealer as well - I expect you'll be be impressed with their prices - if you get down there, ask for Kipp and tell him Mike Ward sent you - bought my Sea Hunt from him a little over 3 years ago.... he won't charge you more than 15% more for mentioning my name I'm sure

X2 what MWard said the skiffs ride in rough seas is bad, room is great on them, but you get a better ride and usually a drier ride on a bay boat, along with the storage,

Mike...you're dead on regard the space for a tank in the bay boat...the SE is beautiful but there is nowhere to put a tank unless you customize the lean post...the Sport will take a tank in the bow area. Turns out SML Yacht club is a NauticStar dealer....see what they can do. Chatlee seems high...

Good lord Mward, I can't read all that to know what u said. Skiffs are sweet fishing platforms. The ride is rough and you will get your @$$ pounded a few times. I got mine dirt cheap and LOVE it! They're not for everyone. If you're serious, you need to ride in a skiff in a windy day and feel it. You're welcome to jump on mine one day if you want. I like the old Sea pro boats. Bad to da bone fishing platforms and awesome ride too. The bait tank is no problem. Remove the seat behind console and put bait tank there. I did it and love it. I never sit when fishing anyways. Even a 198 DLV is lacking in space for a tank much like the bay boats. I would be surprised if anyone around the lake can touch chatlee. SML yacht club wanted 3600 for a trailer that a guy in NC was going to sell for 2700. Even Websters quoted me 3000 for same one. I laughed at the Yacht club.

I have a 22 ft. NauticStar. I have enjoyed it. It is a great fishing boat and OK for family use too. The ride is good but there are several benefits of bay boats. The biggest benefit is lockable storage. There is a lot of rod storage plus an abundance of other storage. It liked several of the features on the NauticStar. Personal preferences. It's most important to pick a dealer with good service. I bought my boat from a home town dealer. I have seen the SML deals go in and out of business. I think Chatlee well do warranty work at SML. I have only heard great things about Chatlee. Check out bayboatforum.pro boards.com/index.cgi AJK

Thanks for feedback...valuable stuff. Decided on the NauticStar 2110 Sport....nice online special w/ 115 Yamaha...SML Yacht Club smoked Chatlee's price.....i get the feeling the Chatlee rep was looking to sell THAT boat.....not A boat. He wasn't too straight when it came to options, features, changes....It's also cheaper then both Chatlee and Anglers Choice pricing for a similarly rigged 198DLV....surprising! pretty sure it's rigged well...i think i will need to take the T Top to a canvas guy and have pass through slots cut in the top...or the console rod holders will be worthless....bait tank will fit nicely in the bow...may mess with an "underseat" solution later...... Thanks again for all info...very helpful...will post a pic when she arrives!

May wanna check that outboard...115 on a 21ft bay boat is on the low side, especially once you add bait tank weight. What motor was on the Chatlee boat?
I can't see how a 21ft Nauticstar is less than a 198 skiff. Anglers Choice must be out of their mind. 198 DLVs used to sell for $16-18k new back in 09.

well here's the numbers.....all out the door, including tax, freight, prep, the whole shebang.... 198 DLV, 115 yamaha, minnkota 24v, dual battery, onboard charger, I drive, 70lb, Ttop with rocket launchers, top box, (No electronics), single axle trailer Anglers - $28,700 Chatlee - $29,500
Nautic Star 2110 Sport bay boat - equipped the same as above.... Chatlee - $32,200 ( rep said the trailer was about $2000.) SML Yacht $ 27,735 ( price doesn't include trailer)
I was amazed at the cost of the skiffs....they're nice boats but I expected them to be substantially less then a bay boat....
the Chatlee boat is 2013...the SML yacht is 2014...ready in 4-6 weeks. The nauticstar rep wants to work with me to customize a TTop that won't block access to the console rod holders ( included in the price)....
