I Realized I havent Posted a Report in sometime. As Most know, Ive finally bit the bullet and brought a new boat home. Took a little time setting it up, and did it right.
As for this spring. Most know the weather was stupid. But the fishing was good. Just like most reports, Big Bait, Big fish! We hammered some good fish this spring, but as always i got my heart broke several times. I cry a little from time to time. Though we did put several nice citations in the boat. Biggest going to 26lbs and a 24lber and several 18-22lbers. ALL RELEASED!
March-April I didnt change much of my tactics just locations some, Mostly just Planers and floats. I belive with the cooler temps this spring, the bite would stay steady well through the day. At times though, the fish would just swirl the baits, dropping back to them by putting your reel in free spool and let the bait stay in the area beside keep trolling it away making the fish chase seemed to help alot with hooking up. Also had several fish that would follow a hooked fish or just checking a bait. A cast of a plug to the following fish would alot of times result in a hook up. One thing i'll do when i check a bait is when i reel in the planer i wont release it. Just real the board to the boat out and infront of the other boards. Once i get close to the boat, I'd let it ride for a min or two. Half the time, a fish would explode on the bait right beside the boat. The moving board and bait may get the fishes attention.
Cutbaiting did ok this spring, although i didnt do much of it. I did have one day were we actually ran out of bait, had some dead baits from short strikes. Set up with the cut gizzard shad. Burned through them in about 30mins. Having 3-4 on at a time from an anchored boat can become a mess.
I havent been out much at a night throwing plugs, but from the dock and while ive been flathead fishing, you can hear the stripers blowing up the alewives.
I havent done much flathead fish yet this spring, except this past week. Ive been focusing on points and flats with live and fresh cut bait and doing well, fishing alot during the daytime to. The best morning was 18flatheads along with just as many channels and several stripers to. I run my clickers while flatheading, had a 16lb striper pick up a cut bait, to actually burn the clicker so hard and fast it busted it. I havent been lucky enough to land any monster flats yet this year, but landed a few citations so far. All flatheads over 10lbs are released!
I didnt take many pictures as i normally, i dont know why. But I do have some cool video, i'll post when I upload them.
