Got back down to the lake late Thursday night so I decided to Turkey hunt Friday morning with a buddy. Friday was my birthday also and it couldn't have been a better day. Had a turkey in my lap by 8am. First public land bird down that way and my first turkey hunt at the lake. Friday evening I put the boat in and went on a family Gizzard hunt. Really trying to focus on getting good bait for fishing Saturday and Sunday. Headed up to gills and made a big bait foul up. My thought was I would have the wife and kids fill the bait tank while I located bait. Got to the back of Gills and the water was orange. Had to run to the main lake to fill with water. DUMB!!!!!! So I head on up BW for bait. We worked a couple hours playing with the new elite 12ti and a new taped net. ended up with a good tank of bait. Some that I picked up from 38'.
*Friday eve report - AT mid 60's WT- 63.7. Calm and beautiful. We fished for about an hour and 15 after the bait hunt. It was action packed and the wife got a real taste of it. We have blow up after blow up. I am talking beaver tail slapping blow ups. We pull the same point 3 times and everytime getting chases. The fish would grab and run the board under. As soon as my wife or myself grabbed the pole and jerk the board up float back up. The fish were still chasing with the boards tripped. It was exciting. So with the inlaws at the dock back home and the kids ready to see the grandparents we made on last turn and my channel side board gets smoked and we boat a 30" stirper to keep out the skunk. It was an awesome day.
*Saturday, AT-45-70 WT-61 Went back to where we had the action the eve before. 3 bank boards 2 channel boards 1 float and 1 down line. Had some action right off the bat with some blow ups and pull backs. decided to run a stinger on the outside board. Pulled the BW banks above the cliffs till noon with very little action at all. Had a could chases but that was it. It was dead. Took the family to bridgewater for the evening and didn't make it back out. We did keep a total skunk out by boating a white perch on a downline Alewife.
*Sunday, AT-48-60 WT 60, Headed to a BW creek and ran a 9 rod set. 3 bank boards, 2 channel boards, 2 DL, and 2 floats out the back. not 5 min after getting the boards out we had our middle bank side planer get nailed. My father-in-law reels in a 27" stirper. Just a couple min later bank board that has a 12" mongo takes off. I am excited as I yell to Olen that's the MONGO with the stinger. Board is buried I grab the rod wait for it fish is still running board is out of sight. SWING and WIFFFFFF city!!!! I am shocked and crying. lol just don't understand how you don't hook up with a buried board and a stinger. We pull around for a while longer getting just a couple chases. The wind picks up to not fun at all. We hook up on the back float and it comes unbuttoned. Olen hooks up on a Down rod and fights the fish to the boat and the hook pulls as I go to net it. looked to be another 25-27" fish. Called it a day at 10:30.
All in all the fishing was tough but there was enough action and lessons learned to call it a good and productive weekend.
