Weather: 30 degrees to start, rising to low 40's, no wind
Water: 57 with visibility of several feet
Techniques: Freeline planer boards (3) on the bank with 8" - 12" gizzards and a light-line 40' out the back with a silver dollar gizzard
Time Fished: 6:30a - 9a
After a big Thanksgiving lunch I decided to go work off some calories by throwing the net. I ran up the lake and didn't see anything flipping much but started tossing up on some muddy banks in 1'-2' of water with a 10', 1" mesh net - was dragging 24-36+ baits out of the mud at a time - unfortunately most were 8" or smaller - with many of them gilling in the 1" mesh net - but I did manage a few 12"+ baits and some good 10" baits as well. I did put out a few baits just before dark to pull a stretch and had a good roll and pull down right off the bat but that was it - but I didn't fish more than an hour so that does not count in my book as a skunk
Got up with the Black Friday shoppers to hit the lake at daybreak to get in a few hours before everyone else got up for breakfast - was on the water about 6:30 and pulling baits in a creek shortly after. Pulled the back of the creek where we had a good hit two days before, but nothing was home today. So, I picked up and moved a little bit up the lake and started pulling from the mouth of the creek in.
About a 1/3 of the way as I pulled across a secondary point in I had a good tug and miss, so I circled back - had another tug and a miss so circled back again with no action - but when I pulled out to make another pass the I spotted a fish deep in some bait and just about then the light-line doubled over - with a spunky little 8 lber
Pulled on a while longer when the biggest bait finally to some attention - it got boiled on a few times, then smacked three of four times before finally going for the bait. Had a good fight with this one pulling some drag several times - digging deep with a few runs as I got it to the boat - when I first saw it I did not think it was that big of a fish but once in the boat it was a solid 35.5" that went 17 or so lbs.
I almost quit for the morning as that was the last of my larger baits, but I wanted to hit a few points in the mid/back of the creek - so I pulled on for another hour - without any action to show for it...... pulled it in and took it to the house about 9am - just in time to sit down to a good breakfast of fresh deer sausage biscuits!
Glad to have gotten the Thanksgiving Skunk off the boat for the trip!
