I only hear about fishing at the crack of dawn, has anyone been doing any evening fishing? It'd be nice to go out whenever I get off work early, just wondering if it's nearly as productive as going out at 5 am...

July aug n early sept dont always fair out for me well in the evenings as they do in the mornings. Now ive done well in the summer evenings for stripers. But better in the a.m. hours. The window of activity seems alot shorter in the evenings over a longer bite window in the morning time. Rounding up baitthe in thethe evenings can be a female dog. If your looking for alewives that is. Peanut shad will sometimes have to suffice.... but you sure as hell cant catch them on the couch

The dam can be a good evening spot in the summer too. It's too rough and hot for me generally to mess with it. Like Travis said, the mornings are generally best but you can catch fish in the evening, no doubt!

Thanks for the tips, catsnstripers you're spot on with catching bait during the day, its hard as hell. I doubt bait would fair very well being in our 20 gal tank for a day and a half if I caught them the night before. Its interesting about the shorter evening feeding window too. I might end up going artificial if I head out some afternoon, or just have to restrain myself until I can get out in the morning!

If you keep the water cold, and maybe do a partial change you can likely keep it happy for a day or more. When we've been down for vacation I'll baby alewives in teh take for a couple of days, but it does take some work. This time of year I'll run some activated carbon in the filter box, and maybe some Ammosorb or whatever its called that you can get at the Pet Store in the aquarium section - put some in a filter bag or old panty-hose / stocking leg if your wife/girlfriend/mother has some old ones she no longer wears (or you, given you are a UNC fan and alll.... ). The smaller the tank the harder it is to keep them for long durations - but if you could catch them and do a water change in the AM, keeping the temps in the mid-60s before heading off work, and do another change just before heading out you might have a shot.... If you have a dock with deep water then you might also have the ability to keep them in a shad cage if you set it deep enough.....

You're opening up a can mward...
There's been a school of peanut shad flipping in our cove every evening around 4, I might just settle and give them a try. I'll post a report on whatever I wind up doing

It's all in good fun, nothing's better than rounding off a few jabs at State fans except sweeping State in basketball maybe...
