Are there any bass still on beds? I know when i was up there in early april some were on beds but we seen a bunch just cruising and some pretty nice sized one too. I know the biggest bass we ever caught was 4 pounds and I want try to find some bigger bass any suggestions?

Some will still be on the beds as late as early June. If you "sight" fish the beds, you can see the bigger bass. When you do, just fish them and see if they bite.

probably shouldn't share this but will anyways, not like its super top secret. one of best ways to get the bigger girls off their beds is to target and catch the usually smaller male that she is paired up with first. don't release him just yet, put him in the live well, then target the big female, she will be much easier to catch...so they say...

usually the male is the main protector, with the female sitting back a little deeper viewing everything. funny thing is, all that time protecting beds, and i've seen females eating their own fry after they hatch LOL

Are you sure they were eating them and not just protecting them by holding them in their mouths?

i've never heard of bass protecting fry by holding them in their mouth, or any fish for that matter. but by all appearances she was eating them, they were disappearing. of course, in fairness, this was a pond, not a large lake.

Have read a number of books and articles on fish eating their young (catfish are the most prolific apparently). Most agree it's myth but there is a strong body of evidence that suggests adult fish will eat fry (and voraciously) when other forage isn't available, kinda like what Redbear described above.
In a year like this one, where you have multiple species up for a spawn at about the same time, it's very likely adults are feeding on others species' fry. We all know bluegill are notorious for raiding bass beds. Let's be clear here - bass are not innocent. They're pretty damn aggressive when the bluegill fry come out.
Not a SML thing but maybe of interest since we're talking about fish eating fry. There was this huge buzz when the snakeheads were found in VA river systems. Many claimed it would ruin those fisheries. It didn't. Then there was the riot over snakeheads spawning several times a year and outpacing other predator fish. They didn't. Turns out the yellow (ring) perch, bass, crappie, catfish, white perch, and other fish really enjoy the multiple snakehead spawns. They're all getting fat off of them. Kinda cool how Mother Nature always finds a way to keep things in balance.
