I decided to fish after work so my daughter and I headed below the bridge to some water I've never fished. We nailed a net of gizzards right off then I had to spend an hour fixing my tank for some reason still unknown. Tossed those baits and netted more. Lines in by 640 and within 20 feet of the boat the first line got smashed. By the time it slowed, it was a good 150 yards away. It paused a second then went on another blistering run. Then it was slack, broke 8/0 hook at the bend! Had a few other good blowups and that was it.
Water was very stained and 65.

The power of these fish is just phenomenal. I'm always amazed by it. .......Maybe next time.

It broke an 8/0 hook? Any thoughts on how this could happen? Weak hook from over use? Was it too thin of a guage? This would eat me up thinking about it.

Yep snapped it right in the bend. I'm not sure how it happens, but it was a fairly new hook with probably 10 or so fish on it prior to this one. It was hooked into a mongo, so it must have been a good fish. They only way I can think it happens is if the hook point gets buried into the bony part of the upper lip and doesn't go the whole way through. In that case, the fish could get a lot of leverage into the hook bend.
I'm more bothered by the fact that we were surrounded by fish the whole time and didn't manage another good bite!

Getting about spawning time/temp.. Did you notice any activity yesterday? The female we boated last week dumped eggs all over the boat seat.

Getting about spawning time/temp.. Did you notice any activity yesterday? The female we boated last week dumped eggs all over the boat seat. Well they were grouped up like we've seen at this time of year in other areas, but we were still just above the state park. The alewives and gizzards moved up onto the main channel banks right at dusk but no fish were after them yet. Fishing smaller bait on down lines might have been a better idea than long freelined planers looking back on it.
