I've looked through most (if not all) of the threads and I can't find an answer to my question.... In the warmer months does the size of the preferred live bait used get smaller? For example, in the colder months it appears that large gizzard shad are the live bait of choice. Is that still the case in the warmer months, or are alewives and/or smaller gizzard shad preferred?
I know a lot of you cut back on some of the striper fishing during warm months and I agree. But just curious about the live bait choice.

Well, in the summer months as the fish school and move deeper to cooler water, the alewifes will be deeper as well so they will tend to feed more on those - not that they won't eat a big bait if it's in front of their face.

IMO alewives are the ticket in summer the summer months.

Yeah, like they said above. The stripers prefer the deeper cooler water in the summer. The alewives will prefer the same water conditions so their kind of in the wrong place at the wrong time.

My understanding, reading old posts, is that the alewives are around the lights, during the summer months, and easier to catch. Harder to keep alive. Jigging spoons, flukes and bucktails then becomes the choice of attack. Page 12 of "live bait" catagory, Catapiller was the last author. Boats will group making it hard to pull rigs or boards.

Sorry, page 12 under striper, general discussion. Lot of talking on the thread about strippers though.
