Weather: nice - low 50's to start rising to high 60s or low 70s in late day, wind was light & variable then picking up to 10 or so from S in afternoon
Water: 50-52, visibility of a few feet
Techniques: 9-14" gizzard on freeline planers (3-5) and a light-line out the back
Time Fished: 7-11a & 6:30-7:30p
Worked from the lake on Friday and was going to run catch bait after work and maybe fish - Tyler and our buddy Brock were headed out so I just jumped on with them - Tyler already had bait and we fished and I ended up taking the left-over bait for Saturday morning. I had forgotten that my bait tank pump was on its last legs, with that death squeal - and sure enough while I stopped for dinner on the way back up the lake when I came back out it was barely running. Fortunately I keep a spare pump on the boat at all times so I did a quick change-out and it was SOOOOO much quieter again.
Took my lake neighbor out for the morning - we were pulling baits close to home by 7am - decided to stay close to start as I am trying to fish close more and he as not exactly dressed of a cool morning boat ride We were not too far down into the pull when a fish showed itself and tried to run off with a planer board dragging a 14" shad. I handed the rod to Kevin and let him go to work. Landed a butterball 14 lb fish that was about 32"
I got the next one on down the way in the creek - this one a 16-17 lb, 36" fish - skinnier than a lot we've been catching.
We moved on up the lake to another spot around 8:30 and right away had another fish on. Picked up several there along with a bonus largemouth - the fish were chowing down on the biggest baits we had - didn't want anything under 12". Even the largemouth ate a 10"+ bait. We were out of our 12"+ baits and made a move to another stretch were we picked up a couple more to close out the morning.
Headed back the house at 11am, dropped Kevin off and picked up the family for lunch. After coming back from lunch my wife joined me for an afternoon bait catching / fishing / sunset cruise. I threw the net while she read a book - quality time!
Loaded the tank down pretty good in a couple of spots and then decided to go pull the last hour of daylight. Marked a few fish but it was slow going - but finally managed to get one in the boat. We tried one more spot without any luck and then headed to the shed to off-load baits and meet the kids for dinner.
Good day of fishing - 6 + a bonus bass in the morning with the biggest at 17 lbs and 36", and smallest around 29", and one in the boat in the evening - nothing big but the fish are sure fishing good and the bait catching is nice at the moment.....
