Yep, even though it's just out of the slot limit. Its senseless to keep it, it's a shame that a fish of that caliber had its life cut short!

When I first saw this post earlier today, I figured gofish2 shared it because he was happy about some guys success. Now I see that Cool hand Fluke seems upset the guy caught the fish. It is a legal catch, so what's wrong with him keeping it and having fish for dinner?

Plenty of smaller fish to eat. Allot of work has been put into this lake to try and bring back our bigger fish. Hate to see the bigger fish taken out. 95% of this board would agree. But to answer your qtn.. Yes it's legal and he has every right to keep it.

I won't jump into the catch vs release debate but a lady crappie fishing near our house caught a 33" striper while crappie fishing. Maybe I should quit working so hard for big shad lol

Nothing by the letter of the regs - but it's a rare resource that should be released if possible - of course after a 30 min fight on crappie tackle it may not have been able to be - though with cold water and enough time I feel it could be revived and released. Many have no understanding of how few of these large fish are out there or how long they take to get to that point - so situations like this allow for some education on those facts to a broader audience. I'm sure you share the same view on largemouth that many of us here do with striper - we want to protect the biggest of the species we pursue. Would you see anything wrong with someone taking a 9.5 lb largemouth caught while striper fishing home for dinner? I'm pretty sure a striper fisherman would be drawn and quartered by most of the bass guys if they did and publicized it. Oh - and it's a hell of a catch and accomplishment to land that fish on such light tackle - had to be a blast of an experience.

I figured gofish2 shared it because he was happy about some guys success. To catch such a fish and on light tackle, great! I would rather seen a picture of the fish swimming off also. But that's his decision. Happy for his success yes, keeping the fish....not so much. If the idea is to increase the numbers of larger, fish, why is it a slot from 30" to 40" and not a anything over 30"?

Well that was discussed, but there was some questions as to what happens if someone lands the state record and wants to keep it?

I'm all for catch and release. Every fish that I'm lucky enough to catch goes back into the water, largemouth, smallmouth, or striper. This guy caught a big fish, maybe the biggest fish he's ever caught. I too would like to have seen it released back into the lake, I would also like to see all LM and SM released and swim away. No one knows if the fish would have survived, was it too exhausted to make it? Like gofish2 said, "If the idea is to increase the numbers of larger, fish, why is it a slot from 30" to 40" and not a anything over 30"?". I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers, I don't know the guy, just didn't think it was fair to post his picture and criticize him. Especially for doing something that was legal and within his rights. See you guys on the water

New (but old) guy here...just my .02...Legal is not always ethical, and ethical is not always legal. We all have our own lines in the sand. Anybody on here ever drive 5mph over the speed limit? I do agree it's a shame to see such a great specimen leave the lake. But I quit shooting bucks years ago for the same reason.
On the other hand...I'd like to know where he found a stripper on the lake . I'm wasting all my time looking for stripers!!! lol
