I'd wager more fish get caught Year-round on alewifes than any size gizzard shad.

I would argue alewife is the main forage of stripers in lake - in the summer yes - but shad is the main forage IMO. Size wise, however, fish are predominantly feeding on shad less than 6" because that's what's most plentiful and easiest for them to catch/feed on. However, if you put a big shad in front of a hungry striper, they're gonna go after it if they can get more nutrients while expending less energy. It's always best to have a buffet of baits and sizes out.

I was referring not to the forage base overall but rather what is used to catch the overall numbers of fish - just meaning that success can be had with alewife which are generally more accessible (via dock lights at night) than feeling you can only catch them in monster shad
