I'm sure mward will add pictures but what you want to do is take the hook into the mouth and out 1 nostril. As far as the stinger you go just behind the poop chute and as shallow as possible.

This is pretty much how I do it on the stinger - find some tough cartilage near the pooper and ram it on through - be sure to wipe any scales off the hook point.

And splash Diet Coke on the baits to remove the human scent from the bait.

This is my first year I have been able to consistently catch some bigger bait and have noticed a lot of swirls and pull backs but no hook ups on them. I was considering using some stingers on my next trip trying cool hand flukes video on tying them on. What size hooks do you recommend and any suggestion you could offer to keep from gut hooking them. Does hooking them through the mouth cut down on the hook turning back on them like it does sometimes through the nose? Thanks

I honestly don't gut hook that many, but I only use on bigger shad. I find the real studs usually get the J hook and the smaller 10-16lbers will get the stinger usually - always exceptions. I'd guess 1 out of 10-15 gets gut hooked. I don't use really strong 4x trebles either in case of gut hooks - you'll lose an occasional fish (change them after every fish!), but you'll save a lot more - better to use something that will dissolve easily. The biggest pain of it is keeping the stingers out of your net and fingers. I use size 2 to size 4 trebles and anywhere from a 6/0 to 9/0 octopus. I hook through a single nostril with the octopus.

I don't striper fish as much as these guys anymore, but I've never used a stinger hook. And my main reasoning is due to that finger picture bentrod posted.
Aside from that, I've never had a need to use a stinger either. Either a big one is gonna eat it or not. If I've got bait that big I'm not too interested in fishing for dinks that can't eat it.
Only thing a stinger is good for in my eyes is causing problems. A hook in the finger is definitely a problem.

Learned a new method from Todd last year. Basically you tie a mini leader like 6" - 9" with the stinger at the end. Then take the swivel and attach it to your leader above the hook you put through the shads nose. This way you can push the stinger up your main leader and not worry about it hooking you while you hook the shad. Then just put the bait out as normal w/o even putting it into the shad. The stinger comes down the leader and swims right below the shad's tail. He says this keeps the shad swimming much more naturally. I had seen pics of Tyler's stinger in the finger and wanted nothing to do with them. Use this method all the time and it's very safe. Of course you do need to mind the stinger while removing the hook, but you don't have to worry about the shad flipping and putting the treble into your hand.

I've done that and rarely ever catch any fish. I've fished with Todd that way too and we didn't catch any either - course they weren't really biting that day, but... - I assume he catches a few! Ha

Let me qualify my reply by stating I don't catch a whole lot of fish period. I also don't use stingers a whole lot. But I do catch fish using this method. As far as Todd goes your assumption is correct.
Tyler, I did not men to offend your or make any kind of suggestion that the method you outlined was inferior. I was just trying offer a different method. I have a great amount of respect for you, and have learned a great deal from your posts.

No offense taken at all - I've just never had any luck that way - only reason I asked. Certainly I've learned a lot from Todd over the past 10-15yrs - prolly more than anybody - and I have utmost respect for him - just never seen that technique work but it must if he's doing it.
