Weather: upper 40's rising to upper 50's. Overcast. Winds from the S around 5-10 starting about noon till about 4:30
Water: 48-50; visibility of 2-5'
Techniques: 6-14" gizzards on freeline planers and a light-lined planer
Time Fished: 10:30a - 2pm; 4:30 - 6:30p
Slept in a bit and let it warm up a little - headed out about 10:30 or so and fished some creeks not too far from me - had a few nervous baits & chases but no commits. Did have a very large largemouth bass come run off with a money-maker gizzard but not get hooked - and them come back and run off with it again - and then a third time - even after my reeling hard on it.... dang bait killer.....
Moved to another area and watched several fish come up and nudge the big baits but not eat the baits....
Got tired of the fish not cooperating so around 2pm I went to catch some bait.... found it in 8-20 feet of water - was successful in getting around 25 or so nice baits in the shallower waters but could not net more than a few in the deeper stuff today - think the water was too clear and they were moving away from the net - was using a 10', 1 lb, 1" mesh net so it should not have been closing up too bad....
Made a run to fish a spot I had some success last week - got there a little after 4:30 and started my pull. Got to the back of the creek without any action and was pulling over a rocky point when the "deep" side board with a big bait buried - and seconds later one of the shallow-side big baits was getting blown up on. I was working the 1st fish and trying to reel and keep the 2nd tight - fortunately it was a 14" bait they got wedged in its mouth and it was not fighting much - I got the 1st fish in the boat but could not get it out of the net due to the hook catching in the rubber mesh - I tried to lip the second fish but as I reached for it, it threw the hook - almost got it by the tail but he slipped away - was a nice fish in the 30-34" range I believe. The one I did get in the boat went 34.5" an 15 lbs
The aftermath of that double was ridiculous. Everything that could possibly get tangled did so twice I think. I almost just said screw it and pull the plug on the boat and swim to shore but finally got things sorted out and started the pull again. A little ways down the bank I was letting a board out a little closer to the bank when it got hammered - but didn't hook up - but almost pulled the hook through the baits head in the process. I reversed my pull and hooked up on another 14" bait - fighting the fish for a couple of minutes until the stinger hook pulled - yep - I didn't throw away those Eagle Claw stingers and get some others yet..... so I paid with another lost nice fish. Tomorrow I'll have the heavier Gama's on for sure.
I did pick up one more 34.25" / 14 lb striper that hit a money-maker sized shad.
Pulled until it was good and dark without any more luck - Good action to wrap up the last 2 hours of the day..... back at it one more time tomorrow....
