Weather: Beautiful. Cool in the morning into the 70s by the afternoon. Wind got up around 2:00pm.
Water: 52-56 degrees, 2-3 visibility.
Method: Pulled big gizzards behind boards and a float on free lines.
Made it to the ramp early around 5:30. Just me and the ducks there while I got rigged up. Found some scattered bait near the bridge but wasn't even close to hitting my mark of a dozen pieces before my arm needed a break. Decided to pedal down river to look for more or pull what I had if I didn't see any before the sun got over the hill. Along the way I was given a few baits near the place I aimed to pull, so I put out 2 of my 3 lines and got busy. Within a few minutes I had two aggressive blowups on large baits, one stolen one spared, but no hook ups. I reset and pulled the same stretch another 3 or 4 times. Got hung up once, blown up on again, and robbed by two bait stealing greenfish. I got both of those in the boat. Both were just over 21". Nice fish, but not what I was after, so they don't count. And I'd much rather have kept my bait!. A fella on a bass boat hollered over, "What are you using?" I said, "Live bait... works real good, you ought to try it." I don't think they thought it was as funny as I did. Looking at the pictures later I'm wondering if it could have been the same stupid fish, though I couldn't imagine it wanting to take the same ride less than 20 minutes later.
I pulled several places through the morning with plenty of play but no hook ups. Got one more LMB, but used up all but the last two baits by about 1:30-2:00 when I was given several more by someone who was heading in early. Again, big thanks! I then moved to a different spot altogether for the last hour or so because I needed to head home around 4:00. I put out 3 fresh, nice baits, biggest I had, hoping for big fish... but it wasn't to be.
Don't get me wrong, I think this was the most action I've had on a single day, I just couldn't manage to boat anything. One fish smacked my bait so hard while I wasn't looking that it scared me, only to watch her turn twice more and still not end up with it! It was truly the day for surface show with nothing to show for it. I had a blast--it was a great day on the water.
Was able to put a couple more names with faces today too. Alway nice to meet people from the board!
