The plan today was to fish early and attempt to catch large bait to add to the home tank. In the end, we did the reverse of that plan. We knew we would be fighting win by lunch but we came across lots of bait about 8 am, and we couldn't leave. We were able to pick up about a dozen baits from 10-14 inches. Found a couple shallow but most were in 30 feet of water mixed with thousands of 6-7 inch baits.
We put a 27 inch first in the boat in the first 10 minutes. Not large but still nice to get that first one out of the way.
We hit one popular creek and made a pass. The wind hit hard just as expected and we were just about to leave when we began to get some nervous baits. First, a bankside board went down and just about the time we got this fish to the boat another board went down. It felt like a big fish. I fought the fish for a while we netted his and then traded rods as I knew this would definitely improve his personal best. After a couple of brief runs the hook pulled. He was ticked. Below is a picture of the boated fish. As you can see by the smile on his face, he got over the lost fish pretty quickly.
In an effort to stay out of the wind we headed further up river. The wind was brutal. We hit a few creeks and had a couple of blow ups but no hookups. My buddy wanted to fish a certain area in the main channel but I didn't think it was possible with the wind as it was. I reluctantly agreed to give it a try. This picture was taken as the wind blew us sideways downstream at 3mph reminding me that where there's a will there's a way.
Sure enough, and although small, we did boat this fish 27 inch fish on a flat in about 2 ft. of water.
Not sure how it happened but this is how this fish was hooked.
As we blew along at record speed. We had several misses, two more hook pulls and then finally caught this 33.5 inch 19 pounder. This thing had been eating well and had a massive girth compared to other fish I have caught off similar length.
We finished the day trying to load up with big baits bit were unable to add any to our home tank.
All fish today hit baits 10 inches or larger.
