Should be one of Todd's or maybe HokieChad's fish. I was the 5300s. Know Todd was the 5500s and one other. It's been around awhile - be interesting to see - we tagged back in 2011.
We caught a bunch of our own fish in 2011 thru 2013 and I've seen an occasional one since but most are gone.

Sweet - Just FYI - if you write down the tag number, location, date, and length of the fish - you can email this info to Dan without removing the tag. I've left the last few in the fish just to lengthen the "story". I know they're worth money so to each their own there, but I don't care about the money.

Where exactly on the fish are these tags located and how big are they? Would they be easy to miss if you werent looking real close? Just want to make sure I would see it if I by chance caught a tagged fish.

Thanks Mike! Here is something of interest I found from that link... I guess it looks like the good old days really were better in terms of numbers of big fish. Would love to know what year the big threadfin die off was and how it correlates to this time line.

It was either the winter of 2009 or 2010 when the threadfins died. It seems like the whole striper fishery changed then.
I've caught a few threadfins since then. But before they died, it was hard to catch anything but threadfins at times in certain areas.

Do we know what happened back in 2002/2003 that caused such an immediate and drastic decline?

Do we know what happened back in 2002/2003 that caused such an immediate and drastic decline? There was a major threadfin dieoff in the winter of 2002-2003 as well. Stripers had been infected with the copepods as well as over population, and then a lack of forage in the spring became too much stress for most of the larger fish in the system to overcome which led to a major fish kill. That's the short story anyways... Just my opinion, but there's also a change in the fishermen that has reduced these numbers too (and if you could see 2014-16, you'd see they've come back up even more I believe). Nonetheless, fewer and fewer fisherman are willing to kill a striper for a piece of paper and length citations don't always get turned in. I've caught quite a few citations in my day and I've yet to ever actually register one. Having said that, I'm sure not all stripers were registered for a citation in the old days either, but I would be willing to bet the percentage was greater then than it is now.
