Weather: mid-40's to start, rising to mid-60's by mid-day - mostly sunny, light & variable winds at best
Water: 46-49, visibility of 2-5 feet
Techniques: Freeline planers with 8" - 14" gizzards - 3 bank side, 1-2 deep side
Time Fished: 7:15 - 11:30a
My son, Matt, and his friend Jabob where up at the lake for the long-weekend and wanted to do some fishing. The wind was bad on Sunday so we punted and decided to fish this morning before they had to head back home mid-afternoon. I spent several hours on Sunday afternoon to catch a number of big baits and search for a few new bait holes. Got 12 or 16 big baits, tucking about 10 away in the shed tank and was set for the morning.
We were pulling baits in my creek by 7:15a. Made it almost to the back of the creek when the biggest bait got eaten and Jacob was on a fish - about the time we got his in the boat the inside planer slowly went down - I thought it was hung on the bottom but Matt reeled in a largemouth bait-stealer  Jabob's striper went right at 10 lbs - his biggest in his two times striper fishing.
We pulled our way out of the creek and had one boil but nothing more so we moved on up the lake a bit to another creek. Made a pass in the back of the creek and had the biggest bait out get slammed and Matt was on the rod.... fought it for a little bit until the stinger hook broke at the knot on the treble My bad I guess.... It was a decent fish from what I felt in handing him the rod. We made another pass through the creek and yet again had a big bait get hit - this time the rigging held and Matt pulled in his personal best - a 19 lb / 36.5" striper - a pound and a 1/2" shy of a VA trophy citation.
We made another pass with no action so we moved on up and hit another creek - worked that one for quite a while with no action at all - moved on to another spot with no love - and then to one more without results - by then it was about 11:30 and we had to call it quits around noon anyway, so we packed it in and headed to the house - not the wide-open action I'd hoped for but then again it is February even if it feels like May.... both boys got a striper (and Matt a bonus largemouth) - and they have new personal best - so a successful day in any book.
