Got to lake and put the boat in around 3am. Bait was easy, but nothing really big. I got 11 dollar bills in the first throw. We went ahead and put about 50 6" - 8" gizzards in the tank since it has been a few weeks since and I figured we would have to fish a lot of spots to find the fish. We found plenty but was snake bit on getting them in the boat Saturday. Fished till dark. Nearly a record day for runs. We probally had 18-20 runs or fish on. Either they did not get hooked up originally or Murphy's Law took over on way too many. The saddest one was a good fish that I had fought for 5 minutes and about 500 yards. We were pulling 7 baits and there was no wind. The fish had bit an outside board and had worked himself out in front of the boat. We were in 50 feet of water. Nothing could go wrong....wrong. It first felt like I was in another line, and then it was a more definite hung up. We went up and looked with the downscan and sure enough a goofy big tree. That was a big fish. We were still on fish Sat. evening about 4:30 when a big fog bank was coming down the lake at us. We left and went back closer to truck. Found another group right at dark and had four more runs. A very shameful total catch with as much action as we had so I refuse to say how many we actually got in the boat on Sat. Three groups of fish found. Roanoke main river above Grimes. Mouth of a secondary creek above the Hales ford bridge and the last group was 3/4 of the way back in a long creek below Hales Ford bridge. Weather was perfect all day. Light to no wind.... misty to cloudy all day.
Went back to room and retied for morning fishing. Got up around 4:30 Sunday and got bait again in same spot. We started up around R47. As soon as there was enough light to see, we were ripping our spread in and racing downlake about 1/2 mile to a very large area of working birds. We were a little late to the party , but still managed to land one on a swimbait about 26". There was two other boats that came to the birds that morning. I saw at least 3-4 more fish landed. That was probally the biggest school of fish we found by the number of birds and how much water was being worked at the same time. We left these to go check on another group we found on Sat. We ended up hanging with that group until we left around 2:00 pm. We ended up with 6 in the boat on Sunday including a 13 pounder and a 17 pounder. Both of those were released. The 17 pounder was caught on a swimbait. Last thing we did was take catch the 13 pounder, take pics and load the boat. Fish were actively biting when we left. Man, is that hard to do!! Had to get back though.
Great trip! Perfect weather. The forecast of rain starting around 8am and continuing all day was dead wrong. Sunday was just like Sat. with less fog. It must have kept many away as there was hardly any boats fishing that we saw. Fish were hanging around certain points. I am obviously a weak advisor as my catch ratio indicated on Sat., but I was say turn around and go back over any where you just got a bite right now.
