I am heading up to the lake for some winter fishing. First time this winter. I will be staying at Smith Mountain dock and Lodge. I can go over to the creeks past the dam, go up Craddick Creek or up Bull Run. Not as familiar of places closer to the mountain during winter. I would love to hear from some of the board vets about best places for me to try this weekend. I will be ready with Spoons for jigging, throwing for bait and downlining and free lining, pulling planers, etc. I will have my green light to gets some bait for tank. Have my new Motor Guide xi5 installed and ready to try it out. Please, all suggestions welcomed.

That's good advice. I've fished a bunch down along the mountain and dam area in the winter, Jan & Feb, and never done much good.
Bull Run and Cool Branch would be a good place to start looking. If you're up for the run, the coves and creeks just above and below the State Park can be good at this time of year. It's probably not much more of a run than to the back of Bull Run.

Went down one of the stripers hit fluke did not take then they got out of dodge ,one thing I noticed he shad weren't staying in the bright part of the light but what appeared to be way up in the hundreds was making circles just on the fringe of the light say like a 10 ft radius I watch this light every night and have never seen anything like it ..

Often your better sized bait will come from just outside the bright part of the light

My advice is to definitely check out Bull Run. But rather than just do it blindly, look at a map of contours and fish areas that look interesting to you. The entire Blackwater area is loaded with cool underwater features! Finally, set your goal to be checking interesting things out rather than catching fish. This mindset serves me well and makes every trip great and full of learning. There is no such thing as a bad day on the water!

Thanks for the advise. I think I will work Cool Branch and Bull Run Saturday and if not getting great action will head to state park on sunday. Hope the first two are so good that I will return on Sunday. I know the CB and BR areas very well. See everyone out there. RP

I am also interested in how things went in Bull Run. For me, I haven't done well there for months. I always end up leaving to go somewhere else to find any significant numbers of fish.
