I set out from Oak Grove at daybreak and headed upstream in the soup. I checked all the creeks and in the process threw some swamp monkeys and jogged some flukes. I didn't see much other than tons of bait. Water temps were 47-48.
At 930, I pointed it south and let it rip for about 15 minutes. Upon my arrival in a creek below the bridge, I saw a good group of fish in the trees. Dropped a fluke and was hooked up and spit out after a few cranks. I bumped around the trees for a bit and found a few lookers. Eventually I got a 36" fatty to the boat and thought it was gonna be on. After that it was a bunch of thrown hooks and pulled off flukes. Probably 6-8 good opportunities missed there.
A guy near me was smoking the white perch on a spoon. So I tried. And failed, except for a few dinks.
I left at 1pm.
That's my mid winter striper report.

Excellent! I'll have to start stalking you now.
I'd love to hear more on the white perch later. They eat almost as well as a crappie.

1/21/2017. Correction.
What would you like to know about the white perch?

Was he catching them in the trees in deep water, in the coves, how deep? Did they look like bait on the screen? Things like that.
Friend of mine in poor health would love to get on something like that, he just can't tolerate long boat trips anymore. If I can go out, get him catching and back in would be a blessing.

They can be a predictable pattern this time of year as long as the water is 46-50 degrees. Yesterday they were tight to the bottom, in and around the trees in 35-38 feet of water. I was using a 1/2 ounce Hopkins, which is my go-to spoon for them. They'd hit it good, but I couldn't get a hook in many of them. Just not my day.
Typically, I like to put a very small piece of crawler or shad on the spoon hook, and they'll tear that up. Yesterday I had neither.
If you look up a person called 1bellcurve on YouTube, he shows a couple great perch rigs that include using flies. I've used them with great success.

Thank you. I didn't mean to turn. Your striper report into a "other species " report. My apologies to the board also.
