Weather: low 30's, light wind, mostly cloudy
Water: 46, visibility of a few feet
Techniques: jigging Zoom "White Ice" Super Flukes on 1/2 & 3/4 oz triangle jig-heads
I had an appointment to get my motor serviced at Bayside Marina on Friday AM ahead of the severe arctic blast coming in over the weekend and had made plans to drop off the boat and jump on with Nathan for the morning - along Thursday evening the plans changed for us to jump on with our buddy Travis of Cats-n-Stripers Charters and fish the morning then I'd ride down the lake to my service appointment.
We hit the water bout 7:15 or 7:30 in search of birds - found some close by in the main channel but they were not doing any diving - just a lot of looking & circling - we watched one pod of birds for a while as it circled and circled and I guess started riding a thermal as they went a 1000 feet or more up in the air. We headed up the lake a ways looking for some other birds - checking a few spots - marking some scattered onesies or twosies - but kept rolling. Travis checked a road-bed in a main creek and we found some fish holding tight to the bottom in about 30' of water. I was able to connect with one and get it to the boat but then we either moved off those fish or they were gone.
We looked around a while longer - spotting some pods of 10 or so fish around 30-40' deep over 80+ feet of water in the main channel, but they were moving quick and we couldn't get a jig on them. Called it quits a little after 10am and I headed on down to my service appointment.
Always makes me nervous to see the ol' Sea Hurt perched so precariously on that fork-lift.... but my new buddy Michael from the shop hung out with me to calm my nerves while they wrapped up the work and I then headed back to the house.
