This morning I told my wife that I had decided I wanted to go back to the lake. She had said I was crazy for going out Saturday in the cold. Today she just looked at me like I was insane, but the compassionate kind of look like I'm insane, like she understands that I can't help it so its ok look. I had to wait on my clothes to get out of the dryer so I was a little later getting started than I wanted to be. Then I remembered I had to get gas. Then while I was pumping gas I realized I left my paddle, so I had to go back to the house. Finally, after the hour and a half drive, I made it to Moorman's for one last chance on my last day off to see if I can't get a fish in the boat.
Air: Cool but not cold, mid 40s
Water: 47, visibility of a couple feet
Method: Same as Saturday... Pulling jumbo shiners (left over from Saturday) behind planers left and right and a float out the back
When I left Saturday just before 5:00 I had a feeling I was leaving just as it was starting to get fishy. I got on the water this time at about 3:30. Without the wind the trash was spread all over the place. I had to pick sections to pull and avoid others. Once I found a decent clean spot and started pulling I had a pull down within a few minutes. So I re-bait and swing around for another pass, this time the hook finds its mark.
This fish was a big deal after two skunks in a row! But this wasn't the most exciting part of the day, or should I say disappointing. While I was getting everything back in order after this first fish I heard some significant splashing from across the channel in a small creek. By the time I get over there nothing is going on but I had tied on a popper and thought I would make a few casts while I pulled the three baits around the area... nothing. I got my bank side bait hung on a laydown I thought I could clear. While I was busy clearing that line my float line that had been sitting still for a few minutes started singing. As soon as picked it up and put it in gear I knew this was a big one. It started heading straight for another laydown so I put the brakes on knowing I'd loose her if I didn't. I got it to the surface and at my side pretty quick being that I'd hooked up right under the boat... and then she got mad... head shaking and splashing... This was a BIG fish. A grapefruit would have fit in its mouth and had room room to bounce around. I get the leader in one hand and then I'm trying to grab its lip with my other... this things lips were as big around as my thumb! It rolled a few times while I was trying to get my hands in its face and then guess what? It got off. I tried to grab its tail... like that ever works. I take a deep breath and start laughing! Fish wins. I would almost bet my boat that fish had papers.
I would have another hook up later that also got off, along with a couple more pull downs, and two greenfish in the boat. All of the action today was around 4:00 until just after 5:00. I fished till about 6:00. After it got dark the bait came out of nowhere and was flipping all over the place, and really spread out.
