My goal for the day since I hadn't been up to the mountain in almost a month, (1) enjoy the water time, (2) invest in some needed reconnaissance, (3) dial in some new equipment, and (4) if possible, catch a fish.
Air temp: 50-63, drizzle until 9 or so
Water temp: 50-51
Water clarity: 6 feet or so, but a bit trashy
I decided to try a new ramp... Hales Ford. Before I shoved off at about 7:30, I took a picture to send home.
As soon as I started pedaling a rainbow showed up.
And then it got bigger...
A lot bigger. I had to do a panoramic shot to fit the both of them... It's not every day you see a double rainbow!
After staring at the sky for a bit, I tied on a deep Redfin and an umbrella rig with the idea that i'd pull them until I found some working birds or some bait. Turns out I would find neither. I did see some birds, (before lunch, none after) but they weren't diving. They were just hanging out, sitting on docks like they had the day off or something. I did see some bait, but it looked to be small bait, and it was deeeeeep, 35'-40' or more. I did mark some fish, maybe, who knows? But finding a screen full of spaghetti that would make me grab my jigging rod? Nope!
I covered a lot of water, making it past Indian Point before I stopped for lunch around noon.
The McRib is back! My wife actually got this as a Dirty Santa present. With the help of a handy MRE app I learned that its contents were:
Pork Rib
Potato cheddar soup
Beef snacks
Peanut butter
Jelly/Jam
Wheat snack bread,
Candy/caffeine mints
Beverage
BBQ Sauce
Accessory packet B
Spoon
Flameless ration heater
The "flameless ration heater" actually got it pretty warm. Who says you can't have a hot meal on the water? I checked the date code and found that it was made on the 268th day of 2013. They're supposed to last for three years if stored at 80 degrees or cooler, so if our government took good care of this fine meal before it "fell off the truck" it was only out of date since late September.
I turned around having covered most of the S curves and got back to the ramp about 5:00. I made good on my goal 1-3 for the day, but I didn't catch squat, so its an official skunk. I've got Saturday to try and end the year with a fish in the boat... we'll see.
