Weather - Partly cloudy early becoming overcast by late morning. Temps in the low 30s rising to mid-50s.
Water Temps - 51 - 54
Technique - lightlined and freelined planers.
I had the day off and after checking the weather report last night I thought today looked like it had the makings of a good fishing day. Got to the lake house at 9 and was on the hunt for bait by 10. Bait was still not easy but after an hour or so I had a nice tank of bait ranging from 8 - 16 inches. I was solo today and catching bait at 25-30 feet is a pain, literally.
I had 5 hours to fish and my plan today was to run and gun. I had about 5-6 areas picked out that I wanted to hit but fortunately for me, I only fished a half mile stretch.
I ran four bankside planers and a float. 100 yds. into the pull and it was fish on. Not really what I was expecting as it put up very little fight. It was a 35-36 inch fish. My only picture of the day. It's just too difficult and I am not getting a selfie stick, SeaJay.
I circled back through that area again. I was on the phone with SeaJay when a board got slammed.......and then a second........and then a third. I couldn't help but laugh as I felt like Yam in his videos. Ended up landing all three, a 33, a 30 and a 6.5 lb. largemouth. Even though I managed to boat them all, I didn't get the mission completed without a mess. Another pass through the area yielded nothing else.
Things got a little slow but I continued to mark fish. After about an hour, I decided I was going to change out the baits. They seemed to be OK but after refreshing the bait, I immediately had some action. A nice thick 31 inch fish. Another 10 minutes and I picked up another 30 incher and the another 33.
I had some action on my mongos and hooked up once on what seemed to be a solid fish but lost it after a quick battle. Other than that miss, all fish were caught on 8-10 inch bait.
I was able to meet Gary (nice guy) and was able to help a couple of guys with bait and that always feels good.
It may have been my best day with planers. It was a lot of fun.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
