I've got more to report this week, well barely. Put in at Hardy Ford and out on the water at sunrise. Water temp 48 at the ramp, wind light and variable, bluebird sky. Pedaled a while before I saw bait but just as I was wondering where they had gone I started to see the flips right off R85 where they've been for the three weeks I've been paying attention. I tossed the net a few times and found they were a little larger than last week, between 3" and 4". I went a little further and started to see some even larger flips...
A few more casts and I had some nice bait, nice for me anyway, 6" dollar bills.
I pulled down the left bank most of the morning with no takers until right after noon where I had watched two fellas catch two stripes off the bank of a pocket in two passes. They motored on after a few minutes so turned around and took a swipe. While watching the bank my channel side light line took off.
Turned out to be my smallest one yet at 25", but kept the skunk away! WT 60 where I hooked up.
I took another pass over the same pocket and this time my bank side dollar bill got chased to the top and swirled on at least three times but no commitment. The rest of the afternoon was pretty much the same, nervous bait/swirl/no possession, 3-4 times or so. Maybe I should have put out some smaller bait?
I had decided that I was going to try to cover more water this trip. Up until then I hadn't been past Moorman's, which isn't that far, but in kayak terms is a sandwich and nabs worth. So I went as far as the cove on the left past the bend with the green hill with all the cows on it. I'm sure these places have names but I don't know any of them yet.
I saw some impressive rock faces. Looked fishy to me, but weren't.
Heading back to the ramp near dusk I pulled past the rock bluffs across from what I think are called the trusses. There were a half dozen boats pulling around and a fella tells me that bite is on. Big splash and I'm hooked up... to a green fish, one I would be proud of any other time.
The worst part is that as I snap this picture, just behind me, and to the left of another boat, a school of stripes boils the bank! And I don't have a bait in the water because of this STUPID BASS! The boat behind me hooks up and lands one but I can't get my junk together in time. It was crazy to watch though!
Great day on the water even though I boated only one fish. I really don't think that was indicative of the day though, plenty of boats I talked with had caught more than one, some several. Or maybe it had something to do with the breakfast my wife handed me on the way out the door.
